Today we’ll look at one matchup from the American League and one from the National League.  Each matchup has its own set of circumstances to analyse and we’ll aim to find some profitable betting tips on each matchup.  The first game we’ll look at is the NY Mets visiting the LA Dodgers.

This is a matchup where a team’s overall record isn’t telling the whole story.  This is game 4 of the series and the Mets have taken the last 3, including two shutout wins on Friday and Saturday.  The Mets have used this run to close up on the Nationals in the NL East and now sit only 2.5 games behind with an overall record of 43-36. 

The Dodgers on the other hand have let a large lead in the NL West slip and now find themselves in second place 1.0 games behind the Giants with an overall record of 43-36 also.  Their recent form has been horrendous having been swept by the giants before losing the first 3 of this series to the Mets.  In their last 6 games they have scored just two runs.

The Dodgers will be aiming to get back to winning ways by using the reigning Cy Young award winner for the national league in lefty Clayton Kershaw.  His record this year hasn’t been as impressive as last season with a 5-4 record and a 2.74 ERA.  Even if he gets back to his best LA will need to reverse their shutout trend if they want to take anything from the game.

Facing him for the Mets is Dillion Gee who has been consistent if not impressive this year.  His record of 5-6 with a 4.42 ERA is fair for an end of the rotation starter and he’ll just be aiming to let the Mets offense have a chance of winning the game.

In the betting we see LA as large favourites at 1.671, with the Mets at 2.400.  The market obviously thinks that with a favourable pitching matchup the Dodgers can break this 7 game losing streak.  The total run market is interesting, set at 6.5.  With the Dodgers lack of runs lately but Kershaw’s pitching I will be backing under 6.5 runs at 1.769.

The second game I’ll look at reads like David vs. Goliath but I’m not sure we’ll see the minnow triumph this time when the Oakland Athletics visit the Texas Rangers.

Texas is having an amazing year leading to a 50-29 record which is the best in all of baseball.  They are 6.5 games ahead of the LA Angels in second place in the AL West and are pulling further ahead all the time.  They have won 17 of their last 21 games and are aiming for the 4 game sweep against Oakland tonight.

Oakland is well out of playoff contention this year with a record of 37-42 and they sit third in the AL west a full 13.0 games behind their opponents tonight.  They will be aiming to get back to a winning record soon but in the tough AL Wild Card race that won’t be close to a playoff spot.

Pitching for Oakland will be Travis Blackley who has a 1-2 record with a 3.05 ERA this season, his recent form has been improving as he is 1-0 in his last 3 starts with a 2.14 ERA.

He will be facing the AL leader in wins Yu Darvish.  Darvish hasn’t had a Cy Young calibre year despite his 10-4 record, his ERA of 3.57 shows just how good his run support has been from the Rangers offense.

The books have this as one of the most one sided games of the year with the Rangers at 1.455 and Oakland at a huge 3.060.  I’ll be looking at the handicap market where you can get the Rangers -1.5 at a respectable 1.885.  I can’t see past their offense continuing to fire and don’t think Oakland have the power to keep it close so I’ll be backing a multi run win for the Rangers.
