Here are another selection of daily betting tips on MLB. Today we have the return of interleague baseball, pitting teams from the American League against their counterparts from the National League. We often find intriguing matchups during interleague play and today is no different.
The first matchup I’ll look at is the battle between two of the biggest teams in baseball the New York Yankees hosting the New York Mets. This matchup is known as the Subway Series due to the close location of the franchises and always garners huge attention from the media and fans.
Both teams are having strong seasons with winning records. The Yankees are 31-25 which leaves them 3rd in the AL East only 0.5 games behind. The Mets are a similar 32-26 which also leaves them 3rd in their division, the NL East. Although they are 1.5 games behind the pace setting Washington Nationals.
The pitching matchup is another story that makes this game even bigger, Johan Santana is coming off his historic no-hitter in his last start, the first in Mets history. He has been well rested after a few extra days off so will be coming into this matchup fresh and looking to continue his excellent form. Over the season Santana’s record hasn’t seemed great at 3-2 but his ERA of 2.38 shows the quality of his pitching.
Facing him for the Yankees is Hiroki Kuroda who has performed well lately after struggling at the start of the year. He has a season record of 4-6 with an ERA of 3.82 but his last two starts have seen him throw an 8 inning shutout against Oakland and only giving up two runs in 7 innings against Detroit his last time out. He will be looking to continue this impressive form in tonight’s much anticipated game.
The Yankees come into this game as strong favourites at 1.775, the Mets 2.220. I feel that despite the Yankees being at home both teams are generally evenly matched and a well rested Santana is a scarier proposition than Kuroda. For that reason I’ll be backing Santana to continue his form from the no hitter and win against the Yankees tonight.
The second matchup I’ll look up today is a repeat of the 2010 World Series with the Texas Rangers visiting the San Francisco Giants. Both teams have been in fine form this season with identical 33-25 records. The Rangers are leading the AL West by 4 games and are looking strong to make the playoffs. The Giants are 4 games back of the excellent LA Dodgers in the NL West and are locked in a very tight Wild Card race with multiple NL East teams.
We have a very interesting pitching matchup in this game also with two lefty pitchers who combine for a 12-5 record this year. On the mound for Texas is Matt Harrison who has an excellent record of 7-3 this year, his ERA is a little higher than you’d expect with such a record at 4.37 however. In Harrison’s last three games he has won them all with an ERA of just 2.49 so his form is impressive.
On the mound for the Giants is another lefty Barry Zito. Zito has had a strong season so far with a 5-2 record and an impressive ERA of 2.98. In his last outing he almost completed a full game shutout, going 8 and a third shutout innings before letting the relievers come in.
Texas comes into this matchup as the bookies strong favourites at 1.741. The Giants at 2.27 seem to me to be too long, the pitching matchup is fairly even and they have home field advantage. The value play to me is on a Giants win.
