This is the first leg of what promises to be a thriller of a Champions League Semifinal. Chelsea, will be looking to avenge the 4-1 loss in the European Super cup in 2012. Diego Simeone surely has plans of his own.

Form and some general points to consider

Atletico Madrid is unbeaten in the last twelve matches (all competitions). This weekend they made what best can be described as a routine win against Elche domestically. With three points secured: Diego Simeone and his squad are in pole position to win the La Liga this season.

In the Champions League the 2013/2014 season has yielded five home wins out of five. In four out of those five Atletico Madrid has scored two or more.

Chelsea is 7-1-4 in their last twelve matches (all competitions). This weekend they had fifteen shots on goal, but could only convert once against Sunderland. On the other hand, Sunderland was gifted a late penalty and won 2-1. This loss definitely set the Blues back in the hunt for Premiership glory. Do note that Chelsea has to travel to Anfield to face Liverpool on the 27th. In other words; the squad will be in for a stern test with so much decisive football in a short time span.

In the Champions League it is worth noticing that they are 0-1-2 in their last three matches away from Stamford Bridge. They’ve also just managed to score two goals in that interval.

Team news

Diego Costa was thought to face a lengthy spell on the sidelines but played against Elche where he scored the match winner.  Only the tricky Arda Turan is thought to be out for the home side.

Chelsea has defener Ivanovic suspended. He has been excellent for Chelsea this season, making his selection for the right back slot a no-brainer for Mourinho. He will definitely be missed, and it will be very interesting to see how Chelsea decides to go about in his absence. One option may be to shift Azpilicueta to right back and let old boy Ashley Cole play in the left back position (if fully fit).

Eden Hazard is still a doubt as well. Obviously the pacey Belgian will be missed too if he can’t play. However, be sure Chelsea will move mountains to get him fit for this clash.

Number One goalie Peter Czech is a doubt too.

Run of play

Both managers are known for being cagey and like to build their teams from the back. However, Atletico should be in control of this game. I would be very surprised if Chelsea goes for the jugular away from home. Mourinho is still without a top drawer goal-scorer and in order to go out and really dominate a game of this stature away from home such a player or two is needed. I think Chelsea will park the bus and look to do what they did against PSG at home.

Betting tip

I am definitely going with Atletico Madrid. I rate them a better team than Chelsea first and foremost. They also have shown great character in the fight for domestic glory! To round it off; they have done amazingly well at home in the Champions League so far.

Chelsea has many quality players, but it looks to me like Mourinho is a transfer window or two away from having a squad he can challenge with the way he’d like to at least. Over two legs he can maneuver this squad to glory, but away from home against a superior opponent on the pitch I think not.
