This Champions League quarter final can be one for the history books. The two sides have fought many a fierce Champions League battles between them through the last couple of decades. A Manchester United in decline looks very much like a David against Goliath Bayern Munich.

Manchester United v Bayern Munich; form & stats

Manchester United was humiliated at home against both arch rival Liverpool and neighbor Manchester City. They did however respond after both those losses with 3-0 against Olympiakos and 4-1 this weekend against Aston Villa.

Manchester United has won all their four home games in the Champions League this season with a goal difference of 9-2. Both goals against were made by German opposition (Leverkusen). This means United has managed three clean sheets in the competition so far at home. They have scored two or more in two of the four games, and both those games went over 2.5.

Bayern Munich is in great shape. They are 25-3-0 domestically with a goal difference of 82-16 and in the Champions League they are undefeated in the last ten away matches. Actually they have won nine of the last ten with a goal difference of 21-5. In five out of those matches they kept a clean sheet, and they scored two or more in seven. Five out of ten went over 2.5 goals!

Manchester United v Bayern Munich; history

Manchester United and Bayern Munich met in the 2010 quarter finals. Both sides won their home game, but Bayern progressed as they scored one more away goal. Bayern Munich also beat Manchester United in the 2001 quarter finals, winning both home and away. On the other hand, Manchester United won the Champions League final against the Bavarians in 1999.

Manchester United - Bayern Munich; team news

Manchester United will be without star striker Robin Van Persie who is injured.  Left back Patrice Evra is suspended and will not participate. Right full back Rafael is a major doubt after coming off at half time against Villa. Winger Antonio Valencia is another doubt. Defenders Jonny Evans and Chris Smalling could return, but it is unlikely they will be fit for a match of this staure! This leaves plenty of question marks over the Manchester United defensive lineup.

Bayern Munich will be without central defender Dante who is suspended. Midfielder Thiago Alcantara will miss due to injury.

Manchester United – Bayern Munich betting tip

Given the Manchester United performances against Liverpool and Manchester City as well the many question marks surrounding their defensive line up, I give the nod to Bayern Munich. Bayern was great last year, but most pundits agree they are even more dominating under Guardiola. Bayern Munich is likely to be the best side in Europe even this season all things considered, and well; Manchester United is mid table in the EPL. It should be an away win!
