GERMANY V ARGENTINA: PREDICTIONS AND BETTING TIPS
It’s the big one in Rio, and Europe’s finest takes on the cream of South America for the ultimate football crown.
GERMANY: STORY SO FAR
Germany started with a highly impressive 4-0 win over Portugal, but the other two group matches where less so, with a 2-2 draw with Ghana and a 1-0 win against the USA giving them seven points and top spot.
The last sixteen match with Algeria brought much criticism to the German side as they laboured to a 2-1 extra time win, but they deserved the win despite being below their best.
The quarter final brought a tough match up with fellow European heavyweights France, but an early Hummels goal was enough to give the Germans the win in an even contest.
What came next was almost unbelievable as Germany tore apart a sorry Brazil side and led 5-0 after half an hour. Seemingly almost pitying the host nation they looked to go easy in the second half, but still added two more for an unreal 7-1 triumph. Brazil were a shambles, but don’t let that take away from a ruthlessly efficient Germany performance that was almost perfect in every way.
Germany have scored seventeen goals and conceded just four throughout the competition, and have four clean sheets based on ninety minutes play in their six matches.
ARGENTINA: STORY SO FAR
Argentina nailed maximum group points but were not overly impressive in beating Bosnia 2-1, Iran 1-0 and Nigeria 3-2 and one man made the difference, not surprisingly that was Lionel Messi.
Into the last sixteen and Switzerland proved dogged opponents, taking the game to extra time. Argentina were easily the better side though and a late Di Maria strike got them the deserved victory.
Probably the best Argentine display came in the quarter final with Belgium, when an early Higuain strike settled the nerves. Messi was the best player on show by some way, but the defence also looked comfortable against the Belgian onslaught late on, and the fact that they are performing better with each game augurs well for them as crunch time draws closer.
The semi final proved a real anti- climax from a viewing perspective, as Argentina and Netherlands largely cancelled each other out in a drab encounter. Main man Messi turned in his most ineffective display here, but still stepped up to take the crucial first penalty which put Argentina on course for the shootout win.
Argentina have scored eight in the tournament to date, conceding just three goals with four clean sheets in their six games.
TEAM NEWS:
Mustafi(def) is out for Germany, but Hummels should start despite a tendon problem. Di Maria is training again but is still a big doubt for Argentina, though left back Roja should overcome an injury scare to make the lineup, while Aguero could start in place of Higuain up top.
RUN OF PLAY:
On what we have seen so far Germany has the stronger team with Neuer the best keeper on show in the tournament, Hummels immense in defence along with being a set piece goal threat, Khedira and Schweinsteiger strong and reliable in defensive midfield and Muller, Schurrle, Kroos and Ozil creative and threatening always. Add to this Klose up top, the record scorer in World Cups and it is hard to find fault. One thing the Germans may need to be though is patient, as Argentina are a dogged opponent who will not be beaten easily. It is harder to enthuse about The Argentina side, with Messi the main man by some way, and he needs to be on song if Argentina can win this, especially in the likely absence of Di Maria. Mascherano deserves a special mention in their side, as this unsung hero does all of the dirty work that makes the Argies so tough to beat, and so frustrating to play against.
GERMANY V ARGENTINA: 1X2 BETTING TIPS
Germany at 2.38(11/8)PaddyPower has to be the 1X2 selection on the World Cup final, and it is a price that looks certain to go shorter in the run up to the big kick off. Peaking at just the right time the semi final win over Brazil defied belief, and though Brazil were awful the Germans were fantastic, and it must have given them a total confidence and belief that they can now go on and lift the World Cup. Argentina are sure to be a tough nut to crack, but even with Messi I expect them to fall short with a narrow Germany win the most likely outcome.
