Netherlands face up to surprise package Costa Rica for a place in the World Cup semi finals. Both sides have deserved to come this far and will both be keen to make a historical last 4 place.

NETHERLANDS SO FAR IN THE WORLD CUP

They have won all four games so far, deservedly so too. They had a very tough group but came out on top over Spain, Chile and Australia. They were 1-0 down to Mexico in a very difficult game in the hot and humid Fortaleza with 5 mins to go. A Sniejder goal and a Hunterlaar penalty in injury time turned the game around. Conditions meant the game was largely played at walking place. Mexico matched Netherlands for most of the 1^st half. However when they did score with a long range effort they panicked and let Netherlands come at them.  Netherlands have scored 12 and conceded just 2 in a solid world cup so far.

 

COSTA RICA SO FAR IN THE WORLD CUP

Cost Rica topped a difficult group, outplaying Italy, England and Uruguay. They were not expected to do anything but surprised everyone with their organized defence, rapid counter attacking and solid keeping from one of the keepers of the competition so far in Kaylor Navas.  Costa Rica were just on top in their knockout game against a limited but game Greece.Costa Rica took the lead just after half time. Then a moment of madness from Duarte with a red card led to a defensive change of plan. In the dying seconds a Greek surge led a scrappy equalizer. Costa Rica battled on for 30 minutes of extra time but didn’t look in much danger. A victory on penalties takes them to their 1^st ever quarter finals. Costa Rica have scored 5 and conceded 2 so far.

TEAM NEWS

Van Gaal opened with a 5-3-2 formation which emphasized wing backs bombing on but the heat rendered the plan inplayable. Netherlands looked much better when going 4-3-3. Leroy Fer is out while Nigel de Jong may not recover in time. Costa Rica will likely line up again with the same team – suspended Oscar Duarte replaced by Jhonny Acosta.

RUN OF PLAY

Netherlands will again force the play here and expect to see Depay and Robben again raiding at will. Costa Rica seem more set to have teams come onto them. Costa Rica looked comfortable against Italy and Uruguay, when under pressure. Less so against England and Greece where they were expected to force the pace.

NETHERLANDS v COSTA RICA BETTING TIPS                                                      

I can’t see anything other than a Netherlands win here. Costa Rica’s excellent run will come to an end. Netherlands simply have too much going forward. They have beaten everyone put against them and Spain, Chile and Mexico are all top teams. Costa Rica have yet to be tested by anyone and if Greece can cause panic in the Costa Rica box Netherlands will run riot. Costa Rica cannot repel them for 90 minutes and I don’t think Los Ticos can even score here.
