Basel v Maccabi Tel Aviv

Basel was the big favourite, and as expected they dominated the match. But it was Maccabi that surprised and opened the score sheet after 30 minutes with a goal by Zahavi. Basel equalized only nine minutes later, but despite controlling the match the score remained 1-1 for the most of the match. Basel got a deserved goal in the 88th minute, and it looked like they would get a decent win going into the second leg. But it was not to be, as Zahavi scored another goal 6 minutes into added time! This gives Maccabi a good chance to grab the Champions League group stage place, and the second leg match should be a thriller.

Celtic v Malmo FF

Celtic was expected to have a tough time against Malmo as they have not been impressive lately, but they seemed in control of the match after scoring two goals within the first ten minutes of the match. Malmo fought hard to get back in to the match and did manage to reduce the lead to 2-1 in the 52nd minute, but that only lasted a short while as Griffith scored his second goal of the match for Celtic in the 62nd minute. The ex-Celtic loanee Jo Inge Berget scored a goal on overtime, making it his second of the night. That late goal can prove to be crucial, as Malmo now only needs one goal in the second leg. So even though Celtic still is the favourite to qualify, the second leg in Sweden will be very exciting to watch.

Rapid Wien v Shakhtar Donetsk

Shakhtar is in control now, after Marlos scored the only goal of the game in the 44th minute, giving the Ukranian side a 1-0 over Rapid Wien in the first leg. The second leg is played next Tuesday in Lviv, and if Shakhtar qualify it will be their sixth successive Champions League group stage appearance.

Valencia v Monaco

The start of the match made all the difference, as Valencia started the match in a quick and intense manner and opened the scoring after just four minutes. It took Monaco over half the match to get an equalizer, but Valencia sealed the match with two more goals in 59th and 86th minute. Especially the last goal by Feghouli will prove crucial, as Valencia are huge favourites to qualify with a two goal lead heading into the second leg.
