A new season at the SportsDirect Stadium and Newcastle fans are as pessimistic as normal. They have a tough opener against the resurgent Southampton. Toon have actually had a decent summer with ex-England coach Steve McClaren taking over while internationals Georginio Wijnaldum, Chancel Mbemba and Aleksandar Mitrovic. Defender Dummett is injured as is striker Riviere. Coloccini and Cabella are doubts too. Southampton will have already played two competitive matches before this one. They destroyed Vitesse of Holland 3-0 at St Marys and will have travelled over there to finish the job. Coach Keoman has stated he will play a strong eleven in Holland so they might need to rotate a bit here for this one. Keeper Forster is out for a while but they have Stekelenburg in to cover. Gardos and Bertrand will miss out too, while there are doubts over Ramirez, Clasie and Long.
Tough game this one for both sides here. Newcastle should be a bit better than the end of last season under John Carver. Southampton will have 2 games under their belt but could be a bit leggy here. The draw is the outsider of three but for me is the most likeliest of results.
