UCL returns with a bang after a long hiatus and we open up with Benfica against Zenit St Petersburg in Portugal. Benfica are 2^nd in Portugal Primeira with 52 points from 22 games. Recent form is impressive with 12 wins, 1 draw and 2 defeats in last 15. In UCL this season they have 3 wins, 1 draw and 2 defeats. At home they have beaten Astana (Kaz) and Galatasaray but lost to Atletico Madrid. They will be without Luisao and Rebocho. Slight injuries to Lisandro Lopez and Fejsa.  Zenit are in off season mode and that is always a worry for me. Friendlies against the likes of Orebro and El Jaish are hardly preparation for these big matches.  Four friendly wins are all they played since the last UCL game mid-December. In Russian Premier they are 6^th with 30 points from 18 games. In UCL this season they have played 6 games and won 5 with 1 loss. The 1^st 5 games were all won and the last was played without full energy as the table was over and secured. Away games seen wins over Valencia and Lyon with a loss to Gent on final day.  They are without Malafeev, Ryazantsev and Smolnikov.

I don’t expect many goals here at all.  The line is set very low as you would expect in this important knock out match.  Both sides are packed with quality in all areas. Zenit are for me the better side but are less active at the moment and I would say not up to match speed. This 1^st leg is going to be a tight, very close match.
