A finely balanced tie in Belgium as Panathinaikos visit Club Brugge. Panathinaikos are 20 times Greek champions but have not taken the title since 2010 after a few financial problems. They finished 2nd last year in the regular season and then won the CL playoff round also. The side is packed with quality though but should have enough for these early rounds – whether they can take that into the group stages and beyond is a doubt though. Overall European experience is vast with 268 matches. They have 95 wins, 65 draws and 108 losses. The Greeks are given a ranking of 100 which seems low but represents their recent poor form. Last year at this very stage they beat Belgium champions Liege 2-1 on aggregate before failing at Midtjylland (Den) next round. The year before they beat Motherwell (Sco) and Malaga (Spa) before failing to exit the group stages of Europa League. Club Brugge of Belgium are quite similar in overall out look to the home side. A regular in UCL group stages and beyond in the late 90s early 00s but then a fall on hard times. They are ranked higher at UEFA at 51. They hold 13 league titles but surprisingly none since 2005. They have 276 games with 137 wins, 57 draws and 95 losses. They did well last year and reached the quarter finals of Europa League. Beating on the way Brondy (Den) and Grasshopper (Swi) – they passed a group with Torino (Ita) HJK (Fin) and Copenhagen (Den) before knocking out AaB (Den) and Besiktas (Tur) before falling to Dnipro (Ukr) - However the year before they fell at the 1st hurdle – losing to Slask (Pol) to give some perspective. They have played 1 league match so far this season and lost that to small club St Truiden. The 1st leg was a bit of a crazy match. Pana won 2-1 but had a man sent off! Defender Sanchez made a crazy tackle and was rightfully sent off. However the Greeks stayed on top with 10 men and were value for their win.
With a man less for thirty mins or so you would never have known in Athens. Pana are 2-1 in the good but a 1-0 win will take the Belgians through. With the players they have I believe the Greeks have the power and ability to take ea result in Brugge. I take Panathinaikos +0.5 and we get paid on the Greek win or draw.
Bet Panathinaikos at +0.50 at 1.98 or 39/40 with bet365.
