ZENIT – AC MILAN PREDICTIONS AND PREVIEW: BETTING STATS

Zenit are 7^th in the Russian Premier League after 10 matches.  They have won only one game of their last 6, after starting the season with 4 straight wins. 3 of their last 5 matches have been above 2.5 Goals.  Their first Champions League game was a dominant 3-0 defeat away at Malaga where they were dominated throughout.

Milan have had their own troubles in Serie A this year and are a disappointing 11^th after 6 matches.  They have been looking slightly better recently wining and drawing their last 2 matches but there is still a long way to go to get back to the level that the fans expect.  Just 2 of their 6 matches have been over 2.5 Goals.  Their first Champions League game was a 0-0 home draw with Anderlecht which is not good enough for a club of Milan’s size.

TEAM NEWS AND RUN OF PLAY

The big story for Zenit is obviously their huge buys at the end of the transfer window and the effect that has had on their squad.  They paid a staggering €50m for Hulk and €40m for Axel Witsel, two players they felt would confirm their dominance in Russia and lead to them competing in the latter stages of the Champions League.  The opposite effect has occurred however with senior members of the squad unhappy at the wages going to the new signings.  Captain Igor Denisov and striker Alex Kerzhakov were sent to train with the reserves after a spat with the management about wage rises and things are yet to settle down.

Milan’s season is also overshadowed by big money players but this time for the opposite reason.  Two of their best and highest paid players, Thiago Silva and Zlatan Ibrahimovic were sold to PSG in a cost cutting move that would save Milan tens of millions per year.  This shows the endless losses at Milan can no longer be sustained and the Chairman will not be underwriting the team with a blank cheque going forward.

With both teams struggling the market seems a bit unsure about pricing.  Zenit are favourites at home but they are still a generous 2.2.  If they can put the player revolt behind them and work together then the squad has the talent to make a real impact in the Champions League this year.
