ARGENTINA V BOSNIA: QUALIFICATION
Argentina topped the South America qualifying section with ease. Unbeaten in 8 games at home and only losing twice on the road they made Brazil at a canter. With a world class midfield and attack they could go deep in the competition but they do lack at centre defence for me to be considered a real favourite. Bosnia & Herzegovina also qualified from ease to reach their maiden finals. They topped a group with Greece and Slovakia of the bigger nations. Bosnia have the attack to trouble any side here with Dzeko and Ibisevic scoring 18 in qualifying in just 10 games.
THE ARGENTINA SQUAD
Coach: Alejandro Sabella
Goalkeepers: 1.Sergio Romero (Sampdoria), 21.Mariano Andujar (Catania), 12.Agustin Orion (Boca Juniors).
Defenders: 4.Pablo Zabaleta (Manchester City), 17.Federico Fernandez (Napoli), 2.Ezequiel Garay (Benfica), 16.Marcos Rojo (Sporting Lisbon), 3.Hugo Campagnaro (Inter Milan), 15.Martin Demichelis (Manchester City), 23.Jose Basanta (Monterrey).
Midfielders: 14.Javier Mascherano (Barcelona), 5.Fernando Gago (Boca Juniors), 6.Lucas Biglia (Lazio), 19.Ricardo Alvarez (Inter Milan), 13.Augusto Fernandez (Celta Vigo), 7.Angel Di Maria (Real Madrid), 11.Maxi Rodriguez (Newell’s Old Boys), 8.Enzo Perez (Benfica)
Forwards: 10.Lionel Messi *C* (Barcelona), 9.Gonzalo Higuain (Napoli), 20.Sergio Aguero (Manchester City), 18.Rodrigo Palacio (Inter Milan), 22.Ezequiel Lavezzi (Paris Saint-Germain).
No secrets within this squad at all, the main thrust of the attack sees Messi actually a little deeper behind Higuain and Aguero. With Lavezzi poised to join in as a supersub they have unrivalled quality upfront. Midfield sees Di Maria raiding from the wings plus they have defensive steel with Mascherano and Gago. The backline is seen as a weakpoint but they look solid enough to me. I think the goalkeeper position is their weak point however.
THE BOSNIA SQUAD
Coach: Safet Susic
Goalkeepers: 1.Asmir Begovic (Stoke City), 12.Jasmin Fejzic (Aalen), 22.Asmir Avdukic (Borac Banja Luka).
Defenders: 4.Emir Spahic *C* (Bayer Leverkusen), 5.Sead Kolasinac (Schalke), 3.Ermin Bicakcic (Eintracht Braunschweig), 6.Ognjen Vranjes (Elazigspor), 15.Toni Sunjic (Zorya Lugansk), 2.Avdija Vrsajevic (Hajduk Split), 13.Mensur Mujdza (Freiburg).
Midfielders: 10.Zvjezdan Misimovic (Guizhou Renhe), 18.Haris Medunjanin (Gaziantepspor), 8.Miralem Pjanic (Roma), 23.Sejad Salihovic (Hoffenheim), 16.Senad Lulic (Lazio), 14.Izet Hajrovic (Galatasaray), 17.Senijad Ibricic (Erciyesspor), 19.Edin Visca (Istanbul BB), 21.Tino Susic (Hajduk Split), 7.Muhamed Besic (Ferencvaros), 20.Anel Hadzic (Sturm Graz).
Forwards: 11.Edin Dzeko (Manchester City), 9.Vedad Ibisevic (Stuttgart).
Slightly unbalanced side Bosnia with supreme attacking talent, but a suspect backline. I have high hopes for Bosnia here though and think they can surpise teams and potentially go far in the tournament. Coach Susic is very attack minded and for me that’s their best approach here.
WARM UP GAMES
Two low key friendlies for Argentina but two wins and 5 goals scored and 2 clean sheets. The 3-0 win to open against Trinidad & Tobago was actually a poor performance Albiceleste who missed a host of chances. They did start with a an experimental side however and Aguero and Higuain were nowhere to be see. Last match was a 2-0 win over an average Slovenia side. Again the pace was way down here as Argentina never really got out of 1st gear. Lionel Messi did score and he created a hatful of chances but again Argentina squandered many opportunities.
MATCH ANALYSIS
It’s a shame for Bosnia that they have to meet Argentina in game 1 as they will almost certainly lose and be on the backfoot straight away. Argentina and Lionel Messi will be under extreme pressure from the off but I feel they have the ability to pick apart this suspect Bosnia back line. The game will be an entertaining affair and both sides have quality in attacking areas.
BETTING TIPS 1X2
The win price on Argentina has remained stable and for me is around the correct odds. Bosnia will have little to lose here as they are not expected to challenge the might of Argentina. I take Albiceleste to be cautious but do enough to win. Bosnia do not have enough quality in defensive areas to keep out the attacking threat of Messi, Higuian, Aguero and Di Maria.
Back Argentina to win at 1.44 (4/9) with Bet365.
