Chile qualified for the World Cup from the South American pool of teams, finishing third behind Argentina and Colombia, ahead of Ecuador and Uruguay.

Australia qualified for Brazil 2014 from the Asian group. They finished second to Japan, proving tough to beat but not offering much going forward either.

Chilean squad

Goalkeepers: Claudio Bravo (Real Sociedad), Johnny Herrera (Universidad de Chile), Cristopher Toselli (Universidad Catolica)

Defenders: Gary Medel (Cardiff City), Jose Rojas (Universidad de Chile), Eugenio Mena (Santos), Gonzalo Jara (Nottingham Forest)

Midfielders: Arturo Vidal (Juventus), Mauricio Isla (Juventus), Marcelo Diaz (Basel), Francisco Silva (Osasuna), Felipe Gutierrez (FC Twente), Jose Pedro Fuenzalida (Colo Colo), Carlos Carmona (Atalanta), Jean Beausejour (Wigan Athletic), Charles Aranguiz (Internacional), Miiko Albornoz (Malmo)

Forwards: Alexis Sanchez (Barcelona), Eduardo Vargas (Valencia), Jorge Valdivia (Palmeiras), Mauricio Pinilla (Cagliari), Esteban Paredes (Colo Colo), Fabian Orellana (Celta Vigo)

As you can see it is a jolly mix of players coming from South American and various European leagues. The biggest star is Arturo Vidal who has had yet another fine season with Juventus. Chile is still sweating on his fitness. He is rather unlikely to participate here. Many of these players will be fairly rested as several of them have been on the fringes of the first eleven in their teams. This can be a minus, as the players could be rusty, but it can also be a plus as the tournament wears on.

Australian Squad

Goalkeepers: Mat Ryan (Club Bruges), Mitchell Langerak (Borussia Dortmund), Eugene Galekovic (Adelaide United).

Defenders: Jason Davidson (Heracles Almelo), Matthew Spiranovic (Western Sydney Wanderers), Ivan Franjic (Brisbane Roar), Bailey Wright (Preston North End), Ryan McGowan (Shandong Luneng), Alex Wilkinson (Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors).

Midfielders: Oliver Bozanic (Luzern), Mark Bresciano (Al Gharafa, Qatar), James Holland (Austria Vienna), Mile Jedinak (Crystal Palace), Mark Milligan (Melbourne Victory), Dario Vidosic (Sion), Matt McKay (Brisbane Roar), James Troisi (Atalanta), Massimo Luongo (Swindon).

Forwards: Tim Cahill (New York Red Bulls), Matthew Leckie (FSV Frankfurt 1899), Tommy Oar (Utrecht), Ben Halloran (Fortuna Duesseldorf), Adam Taggart (Newcastle Jets).

A completely star free, ordinary squad this in my opinion! It is a good mix of home based talent, and abroad based drifters. It is a crafty team, and all respect to them for getting to the World Cup. I do not rate them though, sorry Australia.

Warm up games

Chile has played two games leading up to the World Cup. They won 3-2 against Egypt and 2-0 against Northern Ireland. Both games were played in Chile. Barcelona's Sanchez was the star performer setting up all five goals. Vargas scored three so he displayed solid form too. Against Egypt Chile came from 0-2 to win it. They were rather hopeless in defense, and Egypt could easily have gotten something out of the game. Against Northern Ireland they had a lot of possession, but could not score their first until the 79th minute. On a bright note, playmaker Jorge Valdivia returned from injury and seemed to be fit again.

Australia has also played twice in the run in to the world cup. They drew South Africa (without several regulars) in Sydney before they lost 1-0 to Croatia in Brazil. They probably deserved to beat South Africa as they created more on a poor pitch. At the same time, they defended pretty poorly at times. They defended much better against Croatia, however they did not have much sparkle going forward. It took Australia over an hour to create a chance worth mentioning. That said, Croatia did not outplay them. A solid improvement from the South Africa game to say the least!

Betting analysis

I think the Chileans will control the game from start to finish. They got excellent attacking players, and they’ll push on. The Aussies will have to lay low and defend like they attempted against Croatia. Australia will play a very high energy game, they will try to use their physical advantage to get something on set pieces. A good strategy as Chile doesn't have a traditional defensive setup in any way. When they meet a side like Australia who has a dead ball specialist in Tim Cahill they can get hurt.

That said, if Chile can threaten the Australian defence (that is not all that great looking at the rooster) they should have a good chance converting with class players like Vargas and Sanchez sniffing around in the sixteen yard box. Australia only let in seven goals in their qualification group, but let's be honest; that was against fairly poor opposition.

That Vidal is likely to miss for Chile is of course a minus. He is one of the best players around. However, I would say that if he is to miss a game without consequence in the World Cup it is this one.

Betting tips for 1x2

Chile is the better side by far. They did well in the South American qualification and they line up some quality players. Australia can't realistically expect to get much out of this game. Actually I think the rooster looks poor. The odds clearly reflects that the bookmakers think this as well. BET365 offers 1.45 for a Chilean win. It is probably worth considering in an accumulator with for instance Brazil to beat Croatia and Uruguay to beat Costa Rica for around 2.7 times your stake.
