Mexico placed fourth in the CONCACAF World Qualification group behind USA, Costa Rica and Honduras. In order to get to the World Cup they had to beat New Zealand in a playoff match. This double legged affair ended victorious for the Mexicans, and here they are.
Cameroon won their qualification group in Africa, but still had to play Tunisia for the right to go to Brazil. Cameroon won impressively 4-1 (0-0 away from home, and 4-1 at home).
The Mexican squad
Jose de Jesus Corona (Cruz Azul), Guillermo Ochoa (Ajaccio), Alfredo Talavera (Toluca), Miguel Layun (America), Carlos Salcido (Tigres), Paul Aguilar (America), Andres Guardado (Bayer Leverkusen), Hector Moreno (Espanyol), Francisco Javier Rodriguez (America), Diego Reyes (Porto), Rafael Marquez (Leon), Juan Carlos Medina (America), Jose Juan Vazquez (Leon), Javier Acquino (Cruz Azul), Hector Herrera (Porto), Isaac Brizuela (Toluca), Marco Fabian (Cruz Azul), Carlos Pena (Leon), Oribe Peralta (Santos), Javier Hernandez (Manchester United), Giovani dos Santos (Villarreal), Raul Jimenez (America), Alan Pulido (Tigres)
Luis Montes, an in-form central midfielder has been ruled out due to a broken leg. Javier Acquino is his replacement. With this replacement Mexico only have two central midfielders in the side. They have much more focus on the winger roles now.
The Cameroon squad
Charles Itandje (Konyaspor), Guy Roland Ndy Assembe ( Guingamp), Sammy Ndjock (Fethiyespor), Feudjou Loic (Coton Sport), Allan Nyom (Granada), Nounkeu Dany (Besiktas), Cedric Djeugoue (Coton Sport), Aurelien Chedjou (Galatasaray), Nicolas Nkoulou (Marseille), Jean-Armel Kana-Biyick (Rennes), Henri Bedimo (Lyon), Benoit Assou-Ekotto (QPR), Gaetang Bong (Olympiakos), Enoh Eyong (Antalyaspor), Jean Makoun (Rennes), Joel Matip (Schalke 04), Stephane Mbia (Sevilla, on loan from QPR), Landry Nguemo (Bordeaux), Alexandre Song (Barcelona), Cedric Loe (Osasuna), Edgar Salli (Lens), Samuel Eto’o (Chelsea), Eric-Maxime Choupo-Moting (Mainz 05), Benjamin Moukandjo (Nancy), Vincent Aboubakar (Lorient), Pierre Achille Webo (Fenerbahce), Mohamadou Idrissou (Kaiserslautern), Fabrice Olinga (Zulte Waregem).
Warm up games
Both Mexico and Cameroon opted to play several matches leading up to the World Cup in Brazil. Mexico beat Israel 3-0 in Mexico. It was a game Mexico controlled possession wise. The Israeli's carved out a couple of good chances on their own but couldn't convert. A strong win. Mexico then went on to beat Ecuador 3-1 in Texas, USA. Ecuador was poor defensively, but unlucky not to convert up front. Mexico scored a couple of spectacular long range efforts, and that was it really. Possession wise it was 50-50. Next up for Mexico (in USA) was Bosnia. The Mexicans changed eight players from start, and Bosnia were all over them off the bat. As the game wore on Mexico became better defensively, and Bosnia could not convert more than once. Mexico came close themselves hitting the woodwork. Deserved loss! In the last run-up game to the World Cup Mexico played Portugal (without Ronaldo), also in the US. They lost 1-0, and Portugal was the best team overall. Portual created some very good chances in the first half. Mexico had a few super quick counter attacks on their own, and for parts of the second half they were the better side. It took a stoppage time goal from Bruno Alves to win it for Portugal.
Cameroon without Etoo played Macedonia in Austria and won 2-0. They could easily have scored a couple more. Macedonia only created one proper chance in the whole game. It came from a personal error on the left in Cameroons defence. Very deserved win overall! Still in Austria they then played Paraguay (Still without Etoo). This time they lost, 2-1. Throughout the game Cameroon was the best side overall in my opinion, but they were really sloppy in defence, gifting both goals and a couple of chances to Paraguay. Cameroon also missed a late penalty. Next up for Cameroon was Germany. That game was played in Germany at the Borussia-Park. Here Samuel Etoo was back. Germany owned possession early on, and should have put the game out of reach. The Germans failed to capitalize, and they also failed to keep the tempo up.As a result of that Cameroon got back in the game, and Etoo who opened the scoring. Germany then went 2-1 up. However, a goal from Choupo-Moting leveled the score. Cameroon continued to look shaky at the back, but they do make up for it. The final warm up game for Cameroon was played in Cameroon against Moldova. Several of their best players were rested, but they won 1-0 in a game they controlled. It could easily have been 2 or 3 nil as they also hit the post and created a few more decent chances.
Match analysis
Mexico will most likely approach this game with a five man defence as usual. They will be wary of what Etoo and Choupo-Moting can create up front. It has worked well for them several times, and it makes this Mexico so hard to break down. At the same time, they will try to put a weak Cameroon back line under pressure whenever they can. They got plenty of speed in their side, and based on what I have seen from Cameroon building up to this World Cup this will give them chances. Especially on the counter!
Cameroon has more physical power, and they should definitely be able to control the central midfield as Mexico is rather depleted in that area. When you got players like Song and M'Bia centrally that can spell trouble for Mexico. These players will be able to feed their lethal strikers. The question is how they will fare against a deep lying five man defence, and if their defence is up for the task.
Betting Tips for 1x2
Mexico looks the better side of the two! They seem to have found a solid setup at the back. It gives them a good platform to build on. Here they meet a defence they should be able to create something against as well. Cameroon just doesn't look good enough at the back for me. At times they're sloppy and lose concentration. I would say they're simply not good enough. In the World Cup that will haunt you.
Paddy Power offers 2.38 for Mexico, and those odds do look attractive.
