BOTAFOGO  - FLUMINENSE: PREDICTIONS

Brazil Serie A this time for a match of huge local importance. Botafogo vs Fluminense is a Rio derby known as the Grandpa Derby, so called as its the oldest rivalry in Brazil.

Botafogo are considered a big club in Brazil but in truth they are one of the lesser supported sides and have only managed two championships wins since the leagues inception. Botafogo have had a good start to the season with 3 wins, 1 draw and 1 defeat. They have managed to beat Santos and Cruzeiro in this run too so look in good stead. Botafogo are as short as 8/1 in places to win the title but that’s a bit short for me. A top six finish in not beyond them but I don’t think they can make the top 4.

Fluminense have been one of the most consistent sides in Brazil over the last few years. Winning two of their four league titles from 2010 onwards, Fluminense keep adding to their quality squad with strong players and it’s no surprise to find them among the favourites for this year’s edition. They look to have the most balanced and talented squad in the division. Results have been mixed so far though with 3 wins from 3 at home but losing both away matches. The two defeats were to Coritiba and Portuguesa, neither sides considered a powerhouse of Brazilian football.
