BRIGHTON – NEWPORT: PREDICTIONS

A real David vs Goliath tie this one, Brighton were one of the best sides in the Championship last year and were unlucky not to make the promotion. Newport were non-league for so long they have not played in this competition since 1988.

Brighton played some of the best football in the league last year. The side under Gus Poyet looked very dangerous going forward and defensively were sound. Their only weakness was their lack of squad depth and it all began to unravel around New Year. They couldn’t last the season with only 1 top line striker and although Ulloa came in and looked good Mackail-Smith found himself injured and the side struggled. It ultimately fell apart and Poyet was sacked via text on live TV in strange circumstances. New manager Oscar Garcia looks good and the squad is a little better than last year. Brighton begun the season with a disappointing away loss to Leeds.

Newport are a side risen from the ashes of the old Newport County, that side went into financial administration after relegation from the football league in 1988. In the following season they had to resign from the conference in midseason and were banished to the bottom of the non-league pyramid. Ending up four tiers below the football league. With a fresh start and a large fan base they slowly rose through the divisions until last year when they faced Wrexham at Wembley in the Conference playoff final. Winning brought them a dream return to League 2 after 25 years. Their opening fixture saw the smash Accrington Stanley 4-1 and top the league, albeit briefly.

BRIGHTON – NEWPORT: BETTING TIPS

Brighton have the squad depth to cope with Newport but it remains to be seen whether Oscar Garcia takes the competition seriously. Brighton must be targeting League position over extra “meaningless cup games” and it’s a worry that they may not try 100% here. The goals line looks a bit low in this game which is surprising given the short home odds (1.33 in places) I think Over 2.5 at 1.72 is a big price and could be the value bet of the game.
