West Ham open up their cup campaign with a home game against 3^rd tier Sheffield United. West Ham manager Sam Allerdyce is not one for participating much in cup competitions. Usually aiming to bow out early and concentrate on league matters. However last year saw a change to that as his Hammers side reached the semi finals of this competition. This year he is helped by having a large and relatively strong squad. Here for instance he can bring in the likes of Enner Valencia and Diafra Sakho plus youngsters Dan Potts, Reece Burke, Diego Poyet and Danny Whitehead. Sakho and Valencia are proven international players and should be able to terrorise the defence of Sheffield.  Nigel Clough has already indicated he will change some players here. Again the league takes precedence even in the lower leagues.  Backup players such as likes of winger Jamal Campbell-Ryce, striker Mark McNulty, defender Bob Harris and teenage midfielder Louis Reed pushing for recalls.

The odds are great value on West Ham here, the bookmakers are taking the stance that they cannot be trusted. With Valencia and Sakho starting though a League 1 side such as Sheffield United will struggle to contain that top quality pair.
