Aston Villa has impressed me in their two first games. The 3-1 win at Emirates was deserved, even if Arsenal fans probably will brand the win lucky. Against Chelsea in midweek, Villa lost 2-1. They deserved more, but had a couple of referee decisions go against them. They’ll be heading into this one full of confidence.

Liverpool looked lively from kick off against Stoke, but should really have converted a couple more chances. Stoke produced plenty of fright for the Kop and could easily have gotten something out of the game as they hit the crossbar in the first half, and were given a penalty towards the end that was saved by Mignolet. Squad player Coates is new on the injury list.

Run of play

Since and including 2011 these sides have met three times at Villa Park.  Liverpool has won twice, Villa once. Reverse fixtures in this interval has yielded two wins for Villa and one for the Reds. At Villa park last season LFC came from behind to claim a 2-1 win. The Holte end had much to cheer for in the first half, but after the break Liverpool probably were the best side.

With the aforementioned attacking threat, good defensive organization and momentum on Villa’s side I think they will be having 48-52% of the possession. It will be very hard for the Reds to find rhythm in their short passing game, but with Coutinho, Sturridge, Aspas and Gerrard on the pitch there will always be some good Liverpool moments.
