Chelsea v Liverpool predictions and preview: Betting stats

Chelsea are currently 2^nd in the Premier League with 23 points from their opening 10 games (W7 D2 L1). Their recent form sees a slight dip with a defeat to Man Utd and a draw with Swansea in their most recent games (WWWLD). At home they are denied a 100% record by that Man Utd defeat but have been convincing at home in both Premier League and Europe. Their games average 3.20 goals but only half have exceeded 2.5 goals.

Liverpool are 12^th in the league on 11 points (W2 D5 L3) and have enjoyed a good run of form lately of WDWDD. Away from home they have just lost once, on the opening day of the season and have since drawn against Sunderland and Everton and beaten Norwich. Their games have averaged fewer goals at 2.80 but they have seen the same amount over/under 2.5.

These two sides have enjoyed an increased rivalry lately due to regular meetings in both domestic cup competitions and Europe. Liverpool have in fact won the last 4 PL meetings including a 2-1 win at Stamford Bridge last season. The winner was scored by ex-Blue Glen Johnson but the other 3 players involved in their goals have all since departed Anfield (Maxi, Bellamy, Adam). Despite recent results, Chelsea still lead the head-to-head at home 41-17-21.

Team News and Run of Play

Ashley Cole is a doubt having missed recent games and been left out of the England squad while Lampard will definitely remain sidelined. Brad Jones will continue in goal for Liverpool with Glen Johnson will probably miss out. Lucas, Kelly and Borini are all mid to long-term absentees.

Chelsea have been impressive so far this season and I think their slight dip in form should come to an end sooner rather than later. They struggled to beat a good Shakhtar side midweek but they are grabbing plenty goals from midfield so Torres’ lack of goalscoring form doesn’t seem to be bothering the Blues.

Liverpool started poorly but are unbeaten in their last 5 league games. A Thursday night defeat to Anzhi in Moscow won’t trouble Brendan Rodgers as he sent a young side to the negative temperatures leaving senior figures at home. They have really depended on the form of Luis Suarez this season and I fear for their league position if he were to get injured. I think he needs to put in a sensational performance in this fixture if he is to make a difference to the outcome.

For me I think Chelsea’s blip in the Premier League should end here. They will be buoyed by a late winner in the week and their continued ability to score goals will worry a shaky looking Liverpool backline. I have no doubt that Luis Suarez will have a good game but his lack of a strike partner means he sometimes has to do too much himself and he is clearly frustrated with the setup. A Chelsea win can be backed at 2.01 with Pinnacle and for me that represents real value as I’d have had them nearer 1.85-1.90.

Chelsea’s home games average 3.4 goals which slightly exceeds their overall average while Liverpool’s away games have seen 4 goals a game which is a lot higher than their overall. For me all signs point to over 2.5 goals and that can be backed at a price of 1.73 with Ladbrokes but get it quick as it looks to be shortening!
