Newcastle are currently 10^th in the Premier League with 14 points (W3 D5 L3) and have been pretty inconsistent this season; not least in their most recent five games (LDWDL). At home they haven’t yet won consecutive games but have a decent record, having won 3 times. Their games average just 2.45 goals and only 5 have seen over 2.5 goals; 6 have had fewer.

Swansea are 11^th in the league, 1 place and 1 point lower than their opponents (W3 D4 L4). Recent form has been centred around draws after starting the season with wins (DWLDD) and away from home they arrested a three game losing streak with a 1-1 draw at Southampton last weekend. Their games average 2.82 goals and 6 have seen over 2.5 goals; 5 with fewer.

These sides have only met twice in the Premier League with last season’s game at St James’ ending 0-0. Newcastle inflicted a rare defeat on Swansea at the Liberty Stadium in the reverse; the match ending 0-2.

Team News and Run of Play

Newcastle have long term absentees in Vuckic and Ryan Taylor whilst Ameobi, Gosling and Perch will all miss this game. Chico and Vorm will be missing from the Swansea back line while Bartley is a few weeks away from a return and Neil Taylor won’t be back this season.

Newcastle are struggling for form this season; however without hitting anything like the heights of last season they are going along nicely in mid-table and I think there is still room for improvement which will encourage the fans and the coaching staff. I don’t believe they have made the most of their Senegalese strike partnership of Ba and Cisse and it seems the latter has lost his touch from last season. I think Hatem Ben Arfa has been key for them this season and if they are to win here he will once again have to put in a shift.

Swansea have scored just one away goal since their 5-0 thrashing of QPR in their first fixture on the road. I shouldn’t imagine they’ll be expecting too much from this game but they haven’t conceded too many away from home either and if they do the same here they have a chance of snatching a win. Michu has fallen out of form since his speedy start to the season and will need to contribute some more goals if Swansea wish to maintain a decent mid-table position.

Newcastle v Swansea predictions: 1X2 betting preview

This game is a really tricky one to call. It’s safe to say it’ll be tight and it might be worth looking at the draw here. Newcastle showed last time out that it isn’t just the top teams who beat them as they went down to West Ham at home. For me they don’t have a great defence and their attack clearly isn’t too potent so for me I’ll back the draw at a huge 3.71 with Pinnacle.

With Newcastle just under Even money for the match the Asian handicap is set at 0.5 and for me, fancying the draw, I have to favour the outsiders and Swansea +0.5 at 1.95 with bet365. I think despite the great draw price here you never know if Swansea could nick the win with a solitary goal so it might be worth looking at the +0.5 market which is the same as Double Chance.

Newcastle’s home games have seen just 2.17 goals a game while Swansea’s away games have averaged 2.4 goals. However, discounting that 5-0 away win against QPR, Swansea’s games have seen just 1.75 goals on average and I think that’s the more telling statistic and suggests under 2.5 goals is the bet here. At 2.05 with Stan James it also represents some good value.
