Southampton v Tottenham predictions and preview: Betting stats
Southampton sit 18th in the Premier League currently on 4 points (W1 D1 L6) and have only recently gained those points as is shown in their form (LWLDL) but are yet to string together results. They began at home with consecutive defeats to Wigan and Man Utd before comprehensively beating Villa and securing a draw against Fulham. Their games average a huge 4.63 goals and all but one of the matches has seen over 2.5 goals.
Tottenham are 5th on 14 points and have a record of W4 D2 L2 so far this season. They started slowly but their form of WWWWL is one of the best in the league. Away from home they lost to Newcastle before beating both Reading and Man Utd. Their games have averaged 3.38 goals and 5 have seen over 2.5 goals; 3 have seen fewer.
These two sides haven’t faced off for a number of years so head-to-head record shouldn’t hold too much relevance to the tie.
Team News and Run of Play
Jack Cork and record signing Gaston Ramirez will return in November so miss out on this game whilst Dan Fox and Frazer Richardson may also be absent. Spurs are still struggling with defensive injuries. They will be definitely be without Kaboul and Assou-Ekotto whilst Michael Dawson missed the trip to Portugal with a migraine. Moussa Dembele faces a late fitness test while Scott Parker is out for the foreseeable future. Gareth Bale will return to face his former side after paternity leave.
Southampton have been struggling so far season; certainly not struggling with scoring goals at home but mainly with their defensive performances. I suspect their weak midfield may also struggle with the strength of Spurs but that remains to be seen. It also remains to be seen as to whether they set up any differently in order to stem the flow of goals conceded or if they continue to try and score more goals and hope their luck changes.
Spurs started the season in patchy form but have since picked up plenty of points. Last weekend’s defeat at home to Chelsea was unfortunate as in parts they played some really nice football. On Thursday it has to be said they didn’t play too well against Maribor but I’m sure they will come back to domestic football and sort out their performance.
For me I can see the midfield battle being key to the result here. I believe Tottenham have a much stronger and more experienced midfield and I can see them enjoying a real majority of possession against the home side at St Mary’s.
Southampton v Tottenham predictions: 1X2 betting preview
I think this game will almost certainly be a Spurs win. You won’t get rich off backing teams at odds-on away from home but for me the price of 1.87 with BetVictor for the away win looks a good bet. I can see Jermain Defoe scoring at least one goal here and with the three behind him of Bale, Lennon and Sigurdsson/Dempsey able to contribute goals and service it could be a comfortable victory for Spurs.
If you agree, head over to BetVictor.
Southampton v Tottenham predictions: Asian Handicap preview
The main Asian handicap market here is either 0.5 or 0.75 but for me the price of 2.37 with Paddy Power for Tottenham (-1) looks good. You get your stake returned if they win by just one goal and you win at very good odds if they take home a more comfortable victory. I can see them winning by a couple of goals here.
If you agree, follow me to Paddy Power to take the bet.
Southampton v Tottenham predictions: Total Goals preview
No value lies in the over 2.5 market with best odds of just 1.57 so I think looking at the over/under 3.5 goals market seems better. Southampton’s home games and Spurs’ away games combined average 4 goals so if you can see that trend continuing, back over 3.5 goals at 2.38 with Stan James. It may be worth noting that half of Southampton’s PL games this season have ended with exactly 5 goals.
If you can see a real goalfest, back it here.
