Sunderland v Fulham predictions and betting tips

Sunderland got a much needed injection of energy when Di Canio took over as manager. He sure is a controversial character, but Sunderland certainly improved when he came in.

He has been rewarded by the board as plenty of new faces have come in during silly season. Striker Jozy  Altidore is probably the most interesting prospect. He found himself finally in AZ over the last two seasons. Little, versatile midfielder Emanuele Giaccherini nevner managed to be a regular at Juventus, but he is sure to add a lot to Di Canio’s side. Central defender Diakite was out of favor at Lazio due to a contract dispute. He should be hungry for action, and should be a good addition. Another Central defender brought in is Valentin Roberge. He has been a regular for Maritimo the last three seasons and is likely to strengthen the Sunderland squad. I also like the signing of Central Midfielder/Defensive midfielder Cabral as well. He had a great season for Basel. Vito Mannone has come in for Simon Mignolet

Fulham has been quite stable the last few years. Last season Fulham had their lowest point score in five season’s though. One could question if the club was as ambitious as they had been. The question was justified, in July long term owner Mohamed Al-Fayed sold out to Pakistan-born billionaire Shahid Khan. He hasn’t gone bonkers in the transfer market yet! Actually the signings made all look sensible. Taarabt (Attacking Midfielder) has been loaned from QPR. The experienced and very versatile defense minded Sascha Riether has been brought in from FC Cologne. Central defender Amorebieta has come from Bilbao. Experienced Derek Boateng has come from Ukraine. He is a defensive midfielder who was excellent for Getafe some years back. Maarten Stekelenburg has been brought in to replace Club legend Schwarzer. Urby Emanuelson has  gone back to AC Milan. It looks like Fulham is regrouping, but so far I can’t see them better than 10^th.

Injuries/Suspensions

For Sunderland Wes Brown is probably not fit. Diakite is unlikely to get a full 90 minutes due to lack of match fitness. Craig Gardner (Right wing/full back) and David Vaughan (Defensive midfielder) are both suspended. Steven Fletcher (Attacking midfielder/Striker) is still not ready after his lengthy spell on the sidelines. Fulham won't field Stekelenburg, and Stockdale can't deputize. Etheridge will therefore be between the sticks. Swedish Winger Alex Kakaniklic, who wouldn't be a starter most likely is a doubt.

Recent History

The last three times Fulham has visited the Stadium of Light they’ve returned home with points (1-2-0). Last season it ended 2-2. The points share was a pretty accurate picture of how the game was played. Again it looks like it will be tight.

I rate Sunderland slightly ahead of Fulham if we look at where the sides should finish at the end of the season.  Sunderland has improved slightly more than Fulham, but it will take time to get all the new boys gelled with the spine of the eleven. Also, they have a couple of regulars missing here.

Di Canio’s side has been quite tight at the back in preseason.  I think they’ll try to continue here.
