Sunderland (3-5-11) may still be bottom, but an unbeaten run of five in all competitions means there is definite cause for optimism. A shock win at Everton was followed up with an away draw at Cardiff, where a new found resilience was found to claw back a two goal deficit. Since Poyet arrived as manager things are looking up, and a great escape looks far more likely now than it did a couple of months ago. Aston Villa (5-5-9) winless in five including four defeats, need to pick up quick or risk getting dragged into another relegation scrap. They have been really disappointing, although the only plus going into this game is that away form is much better than their home efforts. The reverse fixture ended in a 0-0 draw, not surprising really, as goals have been difficult for both sides to come by this season. Brown(def) is suspended, and O’Shea(def), Johnson(mid) and Borini(str) are doubts for Sunderland, while Villa miss Clark(def) suspended, with Vlaar(def) and Benteke(str) maybe ready to return.
