Wigan v West Ham predictions and preview: Betting stats

Wigan sit 16th in the Premier League with just 5 points from their opening 8 games (W1 D2 L5). Their recent form is poor and they haven’t won in a while (LLLDL). At home they are yet to win having lost to Chelsea and Fulham and secured 2-2 draws with both Stoke and Everton. 5 of their games have seen over 2.5 goals with 3 having under, at an average of 2.88 goals a game.

West Ham have enjoyed greater success than their hosts and are 7th in the league having taken 14 points from their opening 8 games (W4 D2 L2). Their recent form is good (DDWLW) with the only blip being a defeat at home to Arsenal. Away from home they have secured 4 points from a possible 9 but have only come up against poor sides in Norwich (0-0) and QPR (2-1 win) after their 3-0 defeat to Swansea.

In terms of head-to-head these two sides are fairly evenly matched. In recent years most ties have ended with home wins but last month in the Capital One Cup Wigan beat the Hammers 4-1 at Upton Park. Since West Ham were in the Championship last season the most recent fixture at the DW was in 2011 where Wigan won and narrowly avoided the drop.

Team News and Run of Play

Both sides go into this game with no new injury worries; they both have a few long-term absentees.

Wigan have been struggling in recent weeks. No wins since their Capital One Cup victory against their visitors here but I don’t think too much can be read into that. Their only league win this season came at the end of August against Southampton and since they have been fairly poor. They almost inevitably concede two goals a game and despite their ability to score a goal or two this isn’t enough to make up for defensive lapses.

West Ham have started the season brightly after their poor performance on the opening day. They will want to see more goals coming from the strikers, especially with Andy Carroll fit and Modibo Maiga opening his Premier League account last weekend. Noble and Nolan are no-nonsense midfielders and goalscorers too; they have been stand-out performers for the Hammers.

This game will be feisty for sure but I think ultimately the momentum is clearly with West Ham. They have seen a steady improvement since the start of the season and I believe Wigan are no better than the teams they’ve been drawing with or beating away from home so far this season.

Wigan v West Ham predictions: 1X2 betting preview

The league table, albeit after 8 games, doesn’t lie and I think West Ham need the points against teams like Wigan if they wish to secure an unlikely top half finish come May. I will stick my neck out here and predict a West Ham win. The confidence they will have gained from the 4-1 win at home to Southampton last weekend will no doubt help them and at 3.30 with bet365 I would say that is a very good bet for an improving, in-form side.

If you can see another win for Big Sam’s boys, back them here.

Wigan v West Ham predictions: Asian Handicap preview

Can Wigan secure their first home win of the season? I don’t think so. On the off chance they manage to secure a draw here I think betting West Ham (0) isn’t a bad shout. Stake returned if the game ends a tie and a win if they take 3 points back to London, it’s a very good way of reducing your risk on a game which the bookies think will most likely go the way of the out-of-sorts home side.

West Ham (0) at 2.35 with BetVictor looks a sound investment.

Wigan v West Ham predictions: Total Goals preview

Wigan have conceded 2 goals in each of their opening 4 home games this season. The games average 3.25 goals whilst West Ham’s away games average 2 goals. The combined average is 2.71 so the statistics don’t necessarily help us. I do get the feeling however that West Ham’s recent games have more goals in them so over 2.5 goals is the bet at 1.83 with Ladbrokes.
