Both Evian and Sochaux finished last season just above the relegation spot. Evian finished as number 16, two points above relegation, and secured their position in the last match of the season (not of their own accord as they lost their match, but due to favourable results in the other matches). Sochaux finished as number 15th, one point above Evian.

Both teams are expected to fight relegation this season also.

Evian is an interesting team with profiles such as Zinédine Zidane and Bixente Lizarazu among the owners, and last season they played an aggressive and attacking style game. This was in large part due to the attacking duo of Khelifa and Sagbo, who scored 19 of the total 46 goals. However, they have both been sold now, Khelifa to Marseille and Sagbo to Hull. New players brought in include Escobar and Bertoglio on loan from Dynamo Kiev, Maxime Blanc on free transfer from Lyon, and Nicolas Benezet from Ligue 2 team Nîmes. Benezet received the award for being most talented player in Ligue 2 last season so he will be interesting to follow this season. But overall the team will miss Khelifa and Sagbo, and it will take time for the new players to settle in. In other words, it looks like another season fighting against relegation.

Evian have not done particularly well in the preseason matches. They have won only one of the last five matches, the other four ended with one draw and three losses. Four of the five matches ended under 2.5 goals, underlining the problems Evian are facing without last season’s attacking duo.

Sochaux info and predictions

New players coming in this season for Sochaux are defender Faussurier from Troyes (for EUR 400k) and midfielder Camara (returned back from loan to PAOK). No players have been sold, however, some players have gone out on free transfers or loan, including the forward G. Sio that was on loan and has returned to Wolfsburg. Overall Sochaux look weakened compared to last season, so it seems very likely they will once again struggle to avoid relegation. However, good news is that key midfielder Boudebouz has not been sold yet, despite his wishes to leave to a bigger club.

Sochaux have not impressed in the preseason matches. They hold similar stats as Evian, of the last five matches they have won only one, tied two and lost two matches, and four of the five matches ended under 2.5 goals.

Last season Evian won this fixture 5-1, after two goals by Khelifa and Barbosa and one goal by Berigaud. Evian had the least possession (47%), but shots on target and corners stats were clearly in their favour with 9-2 and 7-3 respectively. Last five encounters between the teams have ended in one win for Evian, one draw, and three wins for Sochaux.

For Evian the defender Djédjé is suspended, and for Sochaux the defensive midfielder Traoré is injured.

The bookmakers have priced Evian at around 2.15-2.20 (23/20 to 6/5), and I do not see any value in this given the sale of Khelifa and Sagbo and that Benezet and the other new players will need time to settle in. Sochaux have undergone fewer changes than Evian since last season and this could prove important at the start of the season. I therefore find value in the away win and 3.60 (13/5) with Bet365 to be a good bet.
