Guingamp v Marseille predictions and betting tips

Guingamp is back in Ligue 1 this season after finishing second behind big spenders Monaco in 2012/2013. Marseille had a good season in the French top flight and ended second behind PSG. This is definitely a David versus Goliath type of fixture. Read on to get my take on the game.

Guingamp info and predictions

Guingamp let in only three goals in their preseason matches. It looks fairly obvious they want to focus on defense so they can survive in Ligue 1. Transfer wise the club has sold France U21 midfield star Imbula to Marseille. They have brought in Sankhare, a 23 year old pretty decent midfielder with Ligue 1 experience. Other than that there isn’t much to report.

I doubt Guingamp will have much to offer over the course of the season. Coach Gourvennec better be prepared for a tough relegation fight.

Marseille info and predictions

Marseille hasn’t had a great preseason, but they’ve faced some good opposition. They have invested considerable money in their squad this transfer window. The mentioned Imbula has arrived. Mendy has been brought in from Le Havre. He is a very talented defender going through the currently successful France youth setup. Marseille has also brought in some players I expect to strengthen their first eleven directly: Khelifa has come in from Evian. He is a solid forward who can also play deeper, and in wide positions. Payet has been brought in from Lille. This is one of my favorite players. Payet is a typical modern dynamic attacking midfielder with an eye for goal.

Marseille looks very much improved to me. Unfortunately for them PSG and Monaco have gone bonkers in the transfer market. It looks like they’ll fight for third unless one of the two aforementioned makes a mess of things. My guess range wise is second through fourth.

It is very rare you see top teams in France win ten or more of their away games over a season. In 2008/2009 three teams managed. In 2009/2010, 2010/2011, 2011/2012 none did. Last season PSG managed 12 wins away. This may not give a 100% spot on picture, but it illustrates my point: Winning away games in France is no easy task.

If we dig a bit deeper, we can see Marseille managed 3 out of 5 wins away against the bottom 5 in the league. This is more interesting. Marseille looks stronger than last year, and Guingamp looks like a team having to fight in this region of the table.

The next step is to compare this to the odds BET365 offers. 2.15 (23/20) is the price they have! This certainly looks like value to me with a good margin of safety. Actually I am sure this price won’t stand long. Get on it while you can!
