Lyon are expected to finish in top 4-5 this season, and they have currently six points out of twelve after two wins and two losses. They won their first two matches of the season, 4-0 at home to Nice and then 3-1 away to Sochaux, but then they lost 1-0 at home to Reims and 2-1 away to Evian TG. In addition, in between the two recent league matches they also played twice against Real Sociedad in the Champions League play-off and lost 4-0 on aggregate. So Lyon are not in very good form, having lost the last four matches and only scoring one goal. They are playing Europa League next midweek away to Real Betis.

Rennes are expected to finish on the top half of the league just above the middle of it. They have currently seven points after two wins, one draw and one loss. The two wins came at home to Reims and away to Evian TG, the loss came away to Nice, while the draw came in their last match when they played 0-0 at home to Lille.

This fixture last season (in May this year) ended with Lyon winning 2-0, in a match where Lyon had 51% possession and Rennes had the most attempts and shots on target (14-9 and 8-5). The last six encounters have ended with Lyon winning twice, Rennes winning once, and the remaining three were tied. Lyon will be missing their playmaker Gourcuff due to injury in the last match against Evian TG, he played all four earlier matches and is the highest rated Lyon player so far this season. Other players out are attacking midfielder Danic (played as sub in two matches and was injured early in the third) and right defender Lopes (have played all four matches) are also out. Rennes have few injury worries, but midfielder Doucoure and attacking midfielder Alessandrini are out (they have not played yet this season).
