Marseille are hosting Evian TG in this second round match of the French Ligue 1. The expectations for this season could not be more different for the two teams – Marseille are expected to fight in the top three positions together with PSG and Monaco, and Evian will be fighting in the bottom half of the table and most likely against relegation.

Marseille have invested considerable money during the transfer window and are overall a stronger team compared to last season. Evian sold off their attacking duo Khelifa (to Marseille) and Sagbo and with their limited budget they have not been able to spend on significant new purchases. Marseille started their season with a 3-1 win away to Guingamp, all three goals scored during the first sixteen minutes of the match. They dominated the possession and created the most chances, generally being strong at finishing. Man of the match was the right attacking midfielder Payet, who also scored two of the goals. Other solid performances were made by goalkeeper Mandanda and left attacking midfielder Ayew. Their main weakness in the match was that they made errors in and around the box – Guingamp got a penalty in 52nd minute that they missed, and the Guingamp goal was due to error by defender Koulou.

Evian TG tied 1-1 at home against Sochaux in their first match of the season. They had the most possession and created the most attempts, but Sochaux were more effective and dominated aerial duels. Sochaux had the man of the match also, the best players for Evian were left midfielder and goalscorer Ehret and central defender Mensah.

There are no injury worries for Marseille, midfielder Ayew was injured in the season opener, but returned to full training on Thursday and will be in the squad. For Evian, Djedje (suspension) and Baouia (injury) will be missing, although the team is expected to be of same strength as in their first match.
