Monaco v St. Etienne is a Ligue 1 clash between team number four and five in the table rankings. I am backing Monaco to win.

Monaco has no major selection worries going into this match. They have displayed excellent form as of late. Momentum is clearly on their side as they knocked Arsenal out of the Champions League competition recently setting themselves up for a quarter final battle with Juventus. Is the success likely to stop? I got a hard time seing that. Monaco started the season in an unspectacular way but has gradually grown into the team we thought they would be. Is Monaco going to be more focused on the Champions League? Well, the first leg of the quarter final is not until 14.04. It is a tad early to get carried away. Secondly; winning this match puts them only one point behind Marseille, currently third in the table rankings. Third place in the Ligue 1 gives Champions League qualification. Therefore I think this is a massive, must win game for the home side.

St. Etienne is no push over by any means. They trail Monaco by only one point and can overtake their opponent with a win. This would put them in good position for challenging for Europa League football next season. It is a problem for them though that they will be without attacking players Max Gradel and Romain Hamouma. Midfielder Jeremy Clement will also sit out. All three have been solid performers this season and will be missed.

I would be surprised if Monaco surrender possession in this game. I would think the home side would have the ball between 55 and 60 percent of the 90 minutes. St. Etienne being without Gradel and Hamouma raises some doubts about their attacking play. Between them they have yielded 12 goals and given 10 assists. Most of the attacking burden will rest on Rick van Wolfsvinkel. He is a decent striker, but he might get very isolated in this tie. It is not like he is up against a poor defensive set up. Over the course of 90 minutes of football Monaco should capitalize and win.
