Nantes finished third in Ligue 2 last season, and is now back in the top league again for first time since 2008/2009. Bastia ended last season as number 12, nine points ahead of the relegation spot and sixteen points behind the Europa League spot.

It is expected that Nantes will struggle and really have to fight to avoid relegation this season, whereas Bastia will most likely stay at bottom half of the table similar to last season. However, both teams have an interesting group of players, so keep reading for more information!

Nantes have not impressed in their latest preseason matches. They won the last match they played in early August, but it was a 1-0 win over Vannes from the National league. The three previous matches were all draws, two of them against teams from the National league and one against Rennes. The lead-up to this season has not been ideal as there were a transfer dispute regarding player Ismael Bangoura that resulted in Nantes receiving a ban from signing new players for next two transfer windows (a ban that was lifted temporarily as Nantes appealed the decision). In midfield they have the talented France U20 national player Jordan Veretout, and up front they have Djordjevic who scored 20 goals in Ligue 2 last season. So much will depend on Veretout and Djordjevic, they really have to rise to the occasion if Nantes is to avoid relegation.

Bastia have only one win in last five preseason matches, against Evian TG. The other four matches ended in two draws and two losses. There have been many transfers in and out of the squad, most important are the exits of attacking midfielder Thavin, forward Modeste and experienced midfielder Rothen. The good thing is that they have brought in several interesting young attacking talents, so overall they look like an exciting team – the question is though whether or not the young players will rise up to the challenge and how long time they need to get settled in.
