Bayer Leverkusen finished the last Bundesliga season unbeaten in eight.  In the pre-season they’ve been pretty good too with strong wins against Vitesse and Udinese. In the recent cup game away to Lippstadt 08 they won 6-1. Kiessling scored twice, and looks to be a massive player for them again this season. He better! As Schurrle left for Chelsea some offensive firepower is surely gone. In Sam they got a man who can help ease some of the goal scoring burden with Kiessling, and Son who joined from HSV looks a decent player too. Carvajal has gone back to Real Madrid, and his defensive contribution will be missed. Kadlec has also left. Some exciting young players like Emre Can have been brought in though, so Leverkusen still has a great first eleven and a good squad. They’ll be contenders for Champions league football for sure.

Freiburg info and predictions

Freiburg had a great season in 2012/2013. They ended 5^th, and improved by 11 points from the previous season. They’ve had a mixed pre-season, and only managed 0-0 in 90 minutes away to Neustrelitz in the German cup recently (they progressed after scoring twice in added time). In my opinion Freiburg is quite weakened going into this season, especially in midfield. Kruse (Attacking midfielder), Makiadi (Central Midfielder), Caligiuri (Left midfielder) and the versatile Flum have all left. Coquelin (Defensive midfield), Jullien (Defender), Klaus (Attacking midfielder) among others have been brought in. Good players no doubt! But I do not think this side will be as good as last year.

Vegar Hedenstad, a versatile defender will miss this game. Vaclav Pilar, a talented attack minded midfielder that has come on loan from Wolfsburg could have started here if he had been fit. Too bad for Freiburg he isn't.

Bayer Leverkusen v Freiburg betting tips

In 2012 these sides met twice at the Bay Arena. In March 2012 Freiburg won 2-0. That was Leverkusen’s fifth loss in a row at the time. In September Leverkusen were in better form and won 2-0. That was a game they very much deserved to win.

Freiburg will probably go for defensive football here and let Leverkusen dominate on the pitch. With players such as Kiessling, Sam, Son and Bender Leverkusen can do great damage. I am in particular unsure of the Freiburg midfield against quality opposition like Leverkusen.
