Bayern Munich, the title holders, has fifteen points after five matches and a goal difference of 15-2, and is currently tied at first place with Borussia Dortmund. They fielded a weakened team (compared to their best XI) last weekend against Darmstadt, but still won a comfortably 3-0. Darmstadt has been difficult to score against, so when I saw the starting XI of Bayern I was not sure how the match would play out. But Pep Guardiola had done his homework and the team performed well.

Since Bayern lost on penalties against Wolfsburg in the German super cup, they have won 11 of 12 matches. The only loss was in a training match against Jahn Regensburg. They are in great form, and I do actually get the impression that they still have some more potential to play out. For today’s match they will still be without great players like the wingers Ribery and Robben. The same goes for defenders Badstuber and Benatia. Lewandowski is fit again, and Bayern has a great number of players that can perform well. Players like Muller, Thiago, Alonso and Lahm all got no or very little play time against Darmstadt, and are ready for today’s match. Javi Martinez came back last weekend after an injury break, and he will be a useful addition to the midfield (or the defence if Guardiola puts him there).

Wolfsburg has eleven points after five matches, and they have shown that they can play well even without De Bruyne (went to Chelsea) and Perisic (to Inter Milan). Draxler was brought in from Schalke, and has worked very well in the defensive setup of coach Hecking. Wolfsburg might perhaps not be quite as good as last season, but there are signs of improvement especially in the last Bundesliga match. It was a pretty even match with some advantage to Wolfsburg, until Bas Dost entered the field. The Dutch player scored twice and seems to be back in good form. Several of the regular players were either on the bench or watching from the stadium, so the team still has more potential available. This has been the case for most matches this season, they have earned a lot of points and not lost a match yet, and overall seem like a well-balanced team. For today’s match they should be able to field very close to their best team. Players like Rodriguez (defender), Bas Dost (striker) was not part of the starting XI against Hertha Berlin, but they are so today. Luiz Gustavo (defensive midfielder) is, however, a player they do not want to have unavailable for a match like todays. He is still doubtful, but could be playing. The defender Vierinha is still unavailable though.

Wolfsburg is one of the few teams that regularly can create real problems for Bayern Munich. Last season they won 4-1 at home, and away they lost 2-1 in a match where they performed quite well and was not outplayed by any means. In the German Super cup just before the start of this season Wolfsburg was a bit lucky and earned a draw 1-1 (and won on penalties). Bayern Munich therefore does have a bit to revenge today, even though that is not a bit talking point in the media. Both teams have a tough fixture program at the moment, playing both Champions League and domestic league, and this was probably the reason why the clubs rested some players last weekend. Next weekend the teams have easier opposition, Wolfsburg is facing Hannover while Bayern will meet Mainz. I therefore believe that today both coaches will field as many of their star players as possible, even if they also have the Champions League next midweek.

If you are to get some decent odds on Bayern (around 2.0 would be my opinion) then you have to go for a handicap of around -1.75. That is pretty big considering the quality of Wolfsburg, even if they are of slightly lower quality compared to last season.

The strategy for this match will be that I will wait for the starting XI. It is very important that Luiz Gustavo is playing for Wolfsburg. If he is not, and you really want to bet on Bayern, then consider watching the match live, and then wait for the -1 handicap line and take it at the odds you find acceptable.
