Hamburger SV are in sixth place with three wins, one draw, two losses, and a goal difference of 8-9. Their form is quite well as they are unbeaten in three matches with two wins and one draw. They beat Borussia Monchengladbach 3-0 away, managed 0-0 at home to Eintracht Frankfurt (a match that really could have ended with more than three goals considering all the chances), and last weekend they won 1-0 away against a very defensive-minded Ingolstadt team (the goal came in the 87th minute). So far they have only played two home matches, and in addition to the mentioned draw against Frankfurt they have beaten Stuttgart 3-2. The match against Stuttgart was won on counter-attacks, Stuttgart attacked gung-ho style and left plenty of opportunities for HSV to counter. For today’s match HSV will possibly miss Serbian player Kacar, who has shown good form and played well in both defensive midfield and central defence this season. If he is unavailable today this will be weaken HSV a bit. Albin Ekdal in central midfield is also doubtful, and like Kacar the Swede has played well for HSV this season.

Schalke has improved their defence and seems like they are taking a more balanced approach nowadays, compared to previous seasons. The team is in third place, three points behind Dortmund and five behind Bayern Munich. They have four wins, one draw, and one loss. The loss came away to the strong team Wolfsburg. They are in good form, and if you include Europa League where they recently beat APOEL 3-0 in Cyprus, then the club has four wins in a row. Last three matches including Europa League has been won to nil (3-0, 1-0, and 2-0). Who would have guessed this, considering the lack of balance in the team over the previous seasons? Next week they are hosting Asteras Tripolis in the Europa League, a match they are expected to win. When it comes to injuries and suspensions, there is nothing new reported from the club. Their defender Dennis Aogo did not play last match and is ready to play should coach Breitenreiter want him to.

HSV has played well recently and will approach this match with confidence. They are looking good in defence with Spahic and Djourou. The midfield is all right and same goes for their offensive play with Lasogga, Illisevic and Hunt. Schalke has good balance in the team, and is on paper and player by player a step up compared to HSV. I will therefore go for the away win. But my strategy is to watch this match live, and assess how the teams are playing. Schalke should be the stronger side, and another possible bet is the over bet on total goals. If there is an early goal I will be looking for an over bet, since both teams are interested in attacking and could really go for it and let the other team counter-attack.
