Mainz 05 hasn’t done much buying in the transfer window and they’ve lost the capable attackers Szalai and Ivanschitz as well as rock solid central defender Kirchoff. Versatile Caligiuri has also left the club. The replacements they’ve brought in are in price brackets a couple of notches below, and will need time to add anything positive to this side. It must be said though that Dani Schahin has the potential to bang some goals. They’ll need a good season from him if they want to survive in a Bundesliga that looks very competitive.

They’ve had a good preseason though against international competition, so it looks like there is nothing wrong with the form. In the German Cup they beat Fortuna Koln 2-1 away.

Since Stuttgart won the Bundesliga in 2006/2007 they’ve struggled to keep that sort of level up. That said; reaching the cup final last year must be good for their fighting spirit. They’ve had balanced transfer window money spending wise, perhaps improving their squad slightly. The biggest name brought in must be Abdellaoue, who is a decent forward but struggles to maintain match fitness. If they can keep him injury free he’ll definitely be a good sub for Ibisevic who has been on fire lately.

Stuttgart has had a decent preseason beating Valencia among others. They’ve looked very composed, so I am sure they will be hard to break down. Being tight is an interesting strategy in a league where many sides attack like headless chickens. In the German cup they won 2-0 away against BFC Dynamo. They’ve also played two legs of Europa League qualification against Botev Plodiv with progression to the next round being the result.

To me Stuttgart looks very mid table. Teams will struggle to break their defense, and Stuttgart has players up front who know where the goal posts stand. If they have a good season 5^th is within reach, but that would be maximum at this point in time.

Stuttgart miss Niedermeier in the centre of defense. He is an absolute rock so he'll be missed. Young versatile defender Rudiger will sit out too. The talented Rojas (Attacking midfielder) who had a great season in Australia is also out.

The defensive rythm of Stuttgart might be broken and the price is worth a shot at that angle
