Mainz 05 v Wolfsburg predictions & betting tips

Mainz 05 has won both their two first Bundesliga matches. Last weekend they were deserved winners away to Freiburg. In their season opener at home at the Coface arena they won 3-2 against Stuttgart. The Stuttgart win was probably a bit on the lucky side as Stuttgart probed the Mainz defense on many an occasion. They just couldn’t convert.

Wolfsburg premiered with a 2-0 loss on Match day 1 away to Hannover, but rose to the occasion at home last weekend as they thrashed Schalke 4-0. The Schalke game was massive. Wolfsburg produced a lot of chances, and even hit the woodwork once. They contained the Gelsenkirchen outfit, and seldom have I seen Schalke have fewer shots fired in a single game.

Since and including 2011 this fixture has been played three times. Twice it has ended a draw, and once Wolfsburg has won it. Last season it ended 1-1. After two early goals, the game got a bit more one sided after Wolfsburg had a man sent off with 60 minutes still to play. However, Mainz was toothless going forward overall.

My betting tip is Wolfsburg draw no bet (Asian Handicap 0) priced at 1.93 with Ladbrokes. I expect this to be a fairly even match when looking at possession, duels and pass completion et cetera, but Wolfsburg is the better side in my opinion and against Schalke they were frightening good. If they can bring that sort of performance into this game they’ll surely win it as Mainz were lucky against Stuttgart, and Freiburg simply looks poor at the minute.
