Stuttgart has four losses in four matches, and a goal difference of 4-12. After going for a gung-ho style in the first three matches against Cologne, Hamburger SV and Frankfurt, it was a more cautious team we saw against Hertha Berlin last weekend. They lost that match 2-1, the Stuttgart match with the fewest goals in so far this season. I expect coach Zorninger will tighten the team even more for this match, if he doesn’t then I think things could get really ugly against a very offensive Schalke. Stuttgart might manage this until Schalke scores the first goal, but if they are behind they need to attack and this will open up the match and the Stuttgart defence. For today’s match the goalie Tyton will be back, while the young and talented defender Baumgartl and the striker Davidi are doubtful and it is 50/50 if they will play. Davidi will be missed if he does not play, he has two goals and two assists so far this season.

Schalke has seven points after four matches. I think they performed very well in the midweek Europa League, beating the somewhat underrated APOEL Nicosia in Cyprus 3-0. A victory today will probably be important in order to keep up with the top teams in the league. The coach Breitenreiter will probably be tempted to really put pressure on Stuttgart – he knows that Stuttgart is really set up as a team to play offensive football, and with Huntelaar in good form, plus players like Di Santo, Choupo-Moting, Meyer, Sane etc. then Schalke should win a match where both teams are really going for it in attack. The alternative is to let Stuttgart keep possession a bit more and dig their own grave, like they did against HSV. It is difficult to know the strategy for sure until the match has started, so I will watch it live and assess the situation. There are no new injuries or suspensions for Schalke. They are going to test Choupo-Moting before match start, but I expect he will play.

Regardless of the strategy Schalke chooses in this match, the odds on them to win is very attractive. You can get 2/1 on them, and you have to wonder if the odds compilers have seen the Stuttgart matches, as they have not been good in defence and have not been able to convert enough goal scoring opportunities.
