History is made in Kazakhstan tonight as the 1st ever Champions League tie takes place as Astana host Galatasaray. Astana are currently 2nd in the domestic league as they trail Kairat by 7 points. In the opening Champions League game they played well but were beaten 2-0 in Stadium of Light by Benfica. They have already played 7 games so far in the competition, winning 3 drawing 2 and losing 2. At home they have won all three matches so far (beating Maribor, HJK and APOEL) Galatasaray are currently 4th in Turkish Super League. They opened up UCL with a home loss of 2-0 to Atletico Madrid. This is a very important game now and I feel only a win will be good enough. Galatasaray miss key striker Burak Yilmaz plus Patrick Twumasi who is suspended.
The artificial surface of Astana Arena has caught a few teams short already with three European sides losing in three games already this season. With a near 5,000km journey to Astana too from Istanbul this is no easy undertaking. I feel the importance of this game to both sides will mean a lack of risk and can see a very tight game.
