The first leg of this Champions League semifinal ended 0-0. Atletico Madrid was the side that wanted the most in that game, and probably deserved to win. Their offensive players were taken out effectively by Chelsea though, and displayed little in front of goal. This second leg will again most likely be a cagey affair between two managers who is known to build their teams from the back.

Form

Chelsea is flying high after another successful park-the-bus display at Anfield Road this weekend. Mourinho changed men in seven positions in the game before against Atletico. On the other side of the pitch: Atletico Madrid is still top of the pops in Spain after a hard fought 1-0 win away to Valencia at the Mestalla.

Team news

Chelsea will be without Frank Lampard and John Obi Mikel due to suspension. Nemanja Matic and Mohamed Salah are both cup tied. Obviously this means a great rotation in midfield! Probably to a slightly more offensive looking one when compared to the central midfield facing Liverpool.

Peter Cech’s season is over, but Mark Schwarzer has lots of experience and has done really well in his absence. John Terry, Samuel Etoo and Eden Hazard could return here. If John Terry returns, this could mean Ashley Cole (who has been brilliant on left back) sits this one out. The veteran could need a rest after all the massive effort he has put in for his team.

Atletico Madrid will miss Gabi due to suspension. Other than that the squad is fit.

Run of play

Chelsea should be slightly fresher going into this tie. Atletico Madrid dug deep to beat Valencia with most of their stars playing many minutes. Chelsea can field many rested players here. Given Chelsea’s energy when playing at home that is a major plus! I think Chelsea will try to dominate possession here and fight like lions. Atletico Madrid has class players in all positions, and surely will have long spells of possession/domination in the game. Here they can also focus slightly more on fast paced breaks, knowing away goals are golden. Diego Simeone will be sure to work on the precision in those breaks in the training sessions leading up to this epic encounter.
