LYON - GRASSHOPPERS : PREDICTIONS

One of the games of the day in Champions League;  One of the biggest clubs in France against a huge side from Switzerland.  Its looks like a French win for me but can the Swiss spring a surprise?

Lyon are one of the most succesfull sides in France over the last decade or so. Before the 2000 season they had never managed a single title but in 2001 they went on a remarkable run that saw them win an amazing 7 titles in a row.  Since 2008 they have not managed to regain a title and the odds look slim indeed now with PSG and Monaco striking gold with owners. Lyon are a very experienced side in Europe with 192 games, they have 99 wins, 38 draws and 55 losses. In Champions League they are one of the busiest sides with 114 games with 55 wins, 26 draws and 33 losses. The French league has not started yet so straight into it for Lyon.

Grasshoppers of Zurich are one of the most successful sides in the country with 27 league titles.  Leagues have been a bit thin on the ground of late though, they have not won since 2003. Last season was a case of nearly but not quite as they lost to eternal rivals Basel by a mere three points, chasing them for almost the entire season.  Playing matches at local rivals FC Zurich while their own ground is constructed hardly helps. Grasshoppers have played three games already in the league with 2 wins and  1 draw.

A one sided game here and Lyon should have little trouble going through against Grasshoppers. The level of French football is above Swiss for sure and the gap in quality in squads is massive. Lyon at a very partian Stade Gerland will be near impossible for Grasshoppers. The only plus for the Swiss is they will be a little more game fit after playing several league games already. The odds on a home win are short though so we look to handicaps for a decent bet.  Lyon -1.25 is the bet (1.80 bet365) We get paid on a 2 goal win and half stake returned on a 1 goal win.
