Malaga v Milan predictions and preview: Betting stats

Malaga sit 3^rd in La Liga after the opening 8 fixtures with 17 points at a record of W5 D2 L1. Their domestic form is a bit indifferent at WDWLW but they have opened their first Champions League campaign with back-to-back 3-0 victories; at home to Zenit and away to Anderlecht. Their league games have averaged just 2.25 goals and half of their games have seen over 2.5 goals.

Milan are a very disappointing 15^th in Serie A and have just 7 points at a record of W2 D1 L5. Their form has been just as poor at LWDLL. In the CL they played out a goalless draw at home to Anderlecht before beating Zenit 3-2 in Russia. They sit 2^nd 2 points behind their hosts in Group C. Their domestic games have averaged just 2.38 goals with 3 over 2.5 goals and 5 under.

Team News and Run of Play

Julio Baptista is a long-term absentee for Malaga so the side are already used to playing without the big Brazilian striker. Another Brazilian who will miss out is Milan’s Robinho who suffered a thigh injury in training last week. Yet another Brazilian striker worth mentioning is Pato. He looks likely to play as he seems to have regained some match fitness in recent weeks.

Malaga are unbeaten in Europe so far this season including qualifiers and are yet to concede. They haven’t conceded many goals in La Liga either so I can see them shutting out a Milan attack that are not very potent this season. They have been impressive in their start to the La Liga campaign as they sit behind just Barcelona and Atletico Madrid; those teams will be difficult to catch but I’m sure Real and Malaga themselves will attempt it.

Milan have had their worst start for many years; 4 defeats in their first 7 for the first time since 1941. I think however that their league form won’t transport across to the CL quite so intensely. They may have missed out on a win against Anderlecht but a victory in Russia is no mean feat at this time of year. The return of Pato will certainly be a boost to Milan and they should score more goals as he regains some form.

I can see this game being a tense affair. It will be one of the biggest ties in Malaga’s history and I think their players will not want to make any early mistakes in front of a huge passionate crowd. Milan know that if they score a few more goals they will get results and will surely believe that a couple of CL wins will give them the confidence they need to move up the Serie A table.

For me this is a difficult game to call. Malaga are a good side and they are confident at home. But Milan have the attacking threat (ineffective so far this season) to take a victory. For me I can see a draw here. It certainly won’t be a high scoring game and for me these sides will probably be happy with a point apiece. The draw is 3.50 with bet365 looks a decent bet.

1.893 is the price on under 2.5 goals for this game with Pinnacle and for me that’s where the value lies. Malaga are fairly low scoring in La Liga and Milan play in one of the lowest scoring leagues in Europe. For me I cannot see either team scoring a few goals. A 1-1 draw would be my correct score bet personally and I think therefore that under 2.5 goals is the bet.
