Real Sociedad v Lyon predictions and betting tips

Real Sociedad won the first leg last week in France 2-0 and are in a great position to advance to the group stages. Although Lyon had the most possession in that match (53%) and one more attempts (12 to 11), it was Sociedad that had the most attempts on target (8 to 4) and the best chances. The two goals they scored were impressive, the first a volley by Griezmann after 16 minutes, then a goal by Seferovic after 49 minutes.

Real Sociedad have played two matches in their domestic league and are currently in 7th position with one win and one draw. Last match was a draw 1-1 away to relegation favourite Elche, a match where Sociedad had 59% possession, 11 attempts (Elche 12) and 4 shouts on target (Elche only 2) – in other words not a very impressive match. Best Sociedad player was goalscorer and right attacking midfielder Vela.

Lyon are three matches into the French Ligue 1 season, standing on third position with two wins and one loss. Their loss came in last weekend’s match home to Reims, they were big favourites but lost 1-0 in what can only be described as a very disappointing result for them. They had 55% possession and won attempts and shots on target with 19-6 and 5-2, but they were poor at finishing and did not convert a penalty in the 72nd minute (they conceded the only goal in the match four minutes later). Lyon came in to the Champions League third qualifying round, where they beat Swiss Grasshoppers 2-0 on aggregate.

The two clubs have met only three times including last week. The two first matches were back in 2004 Champions League and Lyon won both matches 1-0. Lyon have the most experienced team and are a regular in the Champions League, and one potential factor that can ruin for Real Sociedad is that they are inexperienced and have not advanced to CL group stage in last ten years. I backed Lyon in the first leg and still feel they are the better team, and a lot will depend on how confident the Real Sociedad players feel.

Real Sociedad will be without Ifran (forward) and right defender Carlos Martinez (played well in the domestic season opener). Lyon will have to do without goalie Vercoutre, Ghezzal (left attacking midfielder, have not played this season), Dabo (defender, not played yet this season), Danic (attacking midfielder, was substitue in all league matches), Bisevac (central defender, have played all league matches so far).

This match could evolve in very different ways depending on how it starts, if Sociedad get a goal first then Lyon will have a near impossible task and the match could become an anti-climax, but if Lyon score first Sociedad could become nervous and will have a tough time avoiding a second goal. Sociedad will of course be happy with a goalless draw, but we could very well be in for a match with good attacking football where neither team will sit back and wait.
