SHAKHTER KARAGANDY – BATE BORISOV: PREDICTIONS

Week 1 of Germany Bundesliga 2 comes to an end with the Monday night game of Shakhter Karagandy v Cottbus.

Shakhter Karagandy of Kazakhstan has finally come to the fore in their country. After playing in the top flight since its inception in 1992 they finally reached the top in 2011, going on to win back to back titles. This year though they are struggling in 5^th, 15 points behind Aktobe.  In Europe they have hardy featured with 4 wins, 3 draws and 6 defeats.  Last year they matched Sloven Liberec over 2 legs and lost to a late goal in extra time.  Shakhter played a really tight game in Belarus and were very, very organised.

BATE Borisov of Belarus take their place in Champions League with a 2^nd league title in 3 years They have won Belarus title 9 times including the last 7 in a row, the side serves the national team with the majority of players picked from this side. BATE have made the ECL group stages three times in the last five years. In European competition they have 38 wins, 24 draws and 39 defeats from 101 games. In Champions League they have 21 wins 18 draws and 18defeats.  In the home leg BATE dominated possession but could not penetrate at all. BATE had few ideas and could not create any meaningful chances.

BATE Borisov were expected to breeze through this tie and take their place in the next round with the minimum of fuss. Noone told Karagandy however who played a hugely successful containing game. Allowing BATE the majority of possession the Kazakhstan side loaded the middle of the pitch and defended in numbers.  BATE struggled to break them down and looked very limited. In this game BATE have already shortened and are around 1.80. Given they struggled so badly at home I don’t see how they can improve here. I take Shakhter Karagandy +0.75 with bet365.
