Zenit is top of the table in Russia, but will be weakened by the fact that there is a winter break on domestically. They’ve played Shakhtar Donetsk, Metalist and CSKA Moscow in friendlies to keep their level up, but a lack of competitive games could hurt them. For this game new signing Rondon (Striker) is cup tied.
In the Champions League so far Zenit drew all three home games. Porto and Atletico Madrid left St. Petersburg with 1-1 in the baggage, while Austria held the Russians to 0-0.
Borussia Dortmund was unbeaten in their last ten (all competitions), and had won five on the trot before they were soundly beaten this weekend by HSV. Dortmund dominated possession in that game, and fielded a very strong side. I can’t read too much into this result. They are not in the race for the title domestically, and probably already had their minds set on this game.
I dare say Klopp’s group has hit top form. The HSV game aside; they’ve looked a real threat going forward. Lewandowski is still performing at the highest of levels, Aubameyang has been free flowing. Reus too! New boy Mkhitaryan did not impress in the first half of the season, but in the last handful of matches he has looked really good. This team will be a handful.
In the Champions League so far Dortmund has lost to Napoli, but beaten Arsenal and Marseille away from home.
I expect both sides to see plenty of the ball here. Given Zenit being in winter break modus my guess is that Dortmund will have most though! Jurgen Klopp would be interested in dominating this game, as Zenit most likely would have higher tempo in their feet next time the side’s meet. Zenit will most likely try to lay deep, and use the likes of Hulk, Danny, Kerzhakov, Arshavin and Shirokov to counter. That is a decent offensive, but can they expect to contain, and even outscore Dortmund? Looking at recent history in the Champions League, the answer to that question is a definite no.
1x2 betting tip
I go for the away win, priced at 1.80 with Unibet. Dortmund in excellent form, against a Zenit side that hasn’t played a competitive match since the 11th of December should be an away win no matter how you twist and turn it.
