TEAM NEWS AND RUN OF PLAY
Sanfrecce are playing for the 1st time in any continental finals after winning their maiden title last week in J- League. The team from Hiroshima are reknowned in Japan for their amazing production line of talent. Indeed the vast majority of the squad have been promoted from the youth setup.With only three foreign players within the squad this really is a Japanese sucess story. The team plays exciting attacking football, with the superb Hisato Sato regularly ending the moves with his clinical finishing. The Japanese international scoring 26 in 39 this season. Other players to watch out for are the veteran Morisaki twins. Both products of the youth setup and SanFre legends. So far in the tournament Hiroshima have defeated Auckland in a heavily one sided game, last match was a 2-1 defeat to African giants Al Ahly. In a game beset by injuries Hiroshima lost key man goalkeeper Shusaku Nishikawa and had to replace him with a player without an appearance for almost a year. Hiroshima started brightly but could not cope with the intensity of the Egyptians.
Ulsan Hyundai are current Asian Champions League holders. The South Korean side went through the entire qualifying unbeaten such was their strength this year. Perhaps more impressive was their supreme attacking mentality, which was highlighted in the knockout stage of the Champions League, when they won all six matches to claim Asian dominance. However they could not quite cope with playing in the league and in continental competition and sit in a dissappointing 5th position in the top section. The Koreans have been national champions twice in their history but the last victory was in 2005. Ulsan faced off against Central American champions Monterrey and were totally outclassed. The Mexican giants dominated the match for long periods and lay seige to the Ulsan goal. Ulsan were undone by a far superior team and will try and regain some honour in the 5th place match.
