Host nation France take on Republic of Ireland in Lyon in the round of 16. France are unbeaten so far with two wins and 1 draw. The beat Romania on opening day 2-1 in what was far from a complete performance. They looked shaky at the back and never really hit top gear. In the 2-0 over Albania they were more controlled and looked tighter, they left it late though with 2 injury time goals. The 0-0 draw with Switzerland was with some reserve players and both sides didn’t really need to crank up the match and both settled for a 90 minute run-around. A full squad available to the French. Ireland had to wait till the dying minutes of the final game to gain qualification. They battled for a point in a low quality 1-1 draw with Sweden. Ireland possibly edged the game slightly. The 3-0 loss to Belgium was dead on as they looked several levels below their opponents. In the last match Ireland came up against an Italian side who had already won their group. Coach Conte heavily rotated the side and Ireland duly took the win with a late winner. Jonathan Walters is still carrying the injury that has kept him out the eleven and Stephen Ward is unlikely to feature either.
