Esbjerg finished fourth in last season Danish Superliga ahead of the fifth and sixth place teams on goal difference, and they also won the cup. This season they are expected to perform similarly in the league, most likely not fighting for the top two positions, but finishing around third to fifth place. They have got underway in decent fashion and are currently placed second in the league after five matches, winning three and losing two. Their last match was played on Monday this week and they lost it 2-3, so not much rest before this match.

Saint Etienne finished fifth in Ligue 1 last season, but it was their French League Cup victory that earned them the place in the Europe Leauge. The team is expected to finish in the top this season also, and will provide decent opposition to the very best teams. Two matches into this season they are placed fourth after winning both matches 1-0. They beat Ajaccio away in first match and then Guingamp at home in second match – so a solid start  that gives them a boost of confidence, but not very impressive since they after all beat two of the relegation favourites.
