MARSEILLE V BORUSSIA M’GLADBACH PREDICTIONS AND PREVIEW: BETTING STATS AND FACTS

Marseille are in a tough fight at the top of Ligue 1.  They currently sit 2^nd with 22 points after 10 matches, which leaves them even on points with PSG but Marseille have a game in hand.  Recently they have been struggling however with just 1 win in their last 4 league matches, albeit with 3 of those matches away from home.  In the Europa League Marseille have 4 points after 3 matches which leaves them even with their opponents today, Marseille need to pick up at least 4 points from their 4 remaining games to have a chance of going through.

Monchengladbach has struggled this year in the Bundesliga to live up to their excellent 4^th place finish last year.  They are currently in 11^th place with just 13 points from their 10 matches, they are not out of the fight however with 4^th place Bayern Leverkusen only on 18 points.  In the Europa League Gladbach have 4 points from their 3 matches, a poor home defeat to Fenerbahce could be the difference between them qualifying and going out.  If they want to qualify from the group they’ll need to pull off an away result, either in this match or at Fenerbahce.

TEAM NEWS AND RUN OF PLAY

Marseille has a strange situation with midfielder Joey Barton who has a 6 month domestic suspension but is available to play in the Europa Leauge.  He has started their previous 3 games and is likely to play in this one also ahead of being available for league selection from next week.  Marseille have been choosing fairly strong line-ups in the Europa League so far and will know they need a win in this game if they want to qualify for the knockout stages. EDIT: Marseille will rest Nicolas Nkoulou it seems, but Souleymane Diawara is a likely starter again after his absences as of late.

Gladbach had plans of Champions League football this season and spent the money they thought was needed to achieve it.  After €35m of spending (€10m net) they would have felt they had a team that could compete at the top of Bundesliga and in the Champions League.  However In qualifying they were beat 4-3 on aggregate by Dynamo Kiev which dented their plans, and we have spoken about their poor performance in the league already.  This season could put the team back a few years in their long term plan unless they can climb the table back to the Champions League places for next season.

Marseille are favourites as the home side and I think that is fair when you look at their record, they have won 4 of their last 5 at home, drawing only against PSG.  They have scored 11 goals over these 5 games and conceded just 3. 

Paddy Power are offering a very generous 2.0 on a Marseille win which I think will drop so back it quick!
