Tromso are participating in the Europa League due to the result in the 2012 season of the Norwegian Tippeliga, where they finished fourth, six points behind Rosenborg in third and tied on points with Viking in fifth position. The fourth position was not originally giving a place in the Europa League, but due to Norway being second in the UEFA fair play ranking, they were awarded another spot. The 2013 season is well underway with 20 of 30 matches played. Tromso are currently placed thirteen, only three points ahead of the relegation play-off spot. Their form is not good, having lost four and tied two of the last six matches.

Besiktas finished last season in third place in the Turkish Super Lig, three points behind Fenerbache in second and three points ahead of Bursaspor in fourth. This season Besiktas are expected to perform similarly to last season, and are favourites to take third place (behind Galatasaray and Fenerbache). So far they have played only one match, winning 2-0 at home against Trabzonspor. Results in preseason matches were not impressive, they lost to QPR and Southamption and tied against Schalke and Cukaricki, and won against Rizespor.

Besiktas did not participate in any European cups last season. But they are a regular feature in Europe, having participated every season between 2002/03 and 2011/12. The best result came in 2002/03 when they reached the quarter-finals of the UEFA cup. Last two times they participated ended in round of 32 and round of 16, and in 2009/10 they played in the group stages of Champions League
