Group E round of two games and it’s a decent match in Maribor between Slovenia and Switzerland. Both started with losses without scoring and they will both be keen to get back on track. Slovenia are ranked at 53 in the world by FIFA at 555 points. They opened up the competition with a 1-0 away loss to lower ranked Estonia. Slovenia had the lion share of possession but offered up little in the final third. The squad is very plain and offers little in the way of creativity. They have played 4 games in 2014 and lost them all without scoring. Including this game they have lost to Algeria, Uruguay and Argentina.  No surprises in the squad although Dalibor Stefanovic misses out here with a suspension. Switzerland opened up at home to England in a game they went off big favourites in. England shaded the game and had the best chances, while Switzerland were bereft of meaningfull attacks of their own.  Swiss are ranked at 10^th in the world with 1175 points which is overrating them for me. However they do have talent throughout the side and did deserve to get as far as they did in Rio.  2014 has seen them win 5, draw 2 and lose 2. Defeats to England and France the only stains on the side. Draws to Argentina a high point with wins over Ecuador, Honduras and Peru of note.  The Swiss side is the one that went to Rio with a few younger players added in. The likes of Pajtim Kasami and Michael Frey will be ones for the future.

Slovenia are 2^nd best to the Swiss in most departments and the early losses for both sides already make this a panicky no lose game. Looking down the 2 teams it’s the Swiss who impress for me and in Maribor I don’t see a passionate performance coming from the home side. This Slovenia side has to go back to November of 2013 for its last and only goal in the previous 6 matches. I take Switzerland to grab a win here.
