ENGLAND U20 – IRAQ U20: PREDICTIONS

The Fifa U20 World Cup continues with the 2^nd game in Group E. England u20 take on Iraq u20 in an intriguing clash for both sides.

England U20 qualified for the tournament with a last 4 finish in the u19 Euro championships last year. The squad is made up of players from the top sides across England and Eric Dier (Who has broken into the Sporting Lisbon 1^st team after some stellar performances for their B side.) Key men for England include the scouse duo in the centre Conor Coady and Ross Barkley. With Everton man Barkley in particular looking an accomplished player. Up front England do not have much experience at all with only Harry Kane of the front four with any senior experience. The back line is pretty solid though and has many options with Everton full back John Stones a standout. The England side has the capability to go far but they as usual tend to struggle in the latter stages. In a warm up game earlier this week England dominated a tough Uruguay side and ran out 3-0 winners in a great confidence booster.

Iraq U20 finished off an impressive run in last year’s u19 Asian Cup and were seconds away from an impressive victory. In the final vs South Korea they were the better side for most of the match but conceded an equaliser in the 93^rd minute, then bowed out on penalties. Iraq u20 are a side who take these competitions ultra-serious and indeed have played 9 friendly games since the end of May. With 5 wins, 3 draws and 1 defeat they will be well attuned to each others play. The key man for Iraq will be 2^nd striker Mohannad Abdul-Raheem. The Duhok player is the current Asian Footballer of the year and despite being only 19 has managed over 40 goals in his career so far. Iraq will surprise many teams I feel here and should not be underestimated.

On paper this does look a sure-fire England u20 win, however I find England sides are always over estimated and have little success at youth level at all. The players are usually well drilled but they have little flair or skill and fear seems to play a big part for me.
